I have spent quite a bit of time searching google, these forums, and other resources looking for the best way to access the data in my outlook.ost file.

I figure this might be a common enough problem that someone else has already encountered and overcame.

I have found Recovery Toolbox for Outlook which purports to do what I want, but I don't want to pay for it only to find out it is a waste of money.

An added challenge is that the ost file exceeds 2GB which seems to be a limit for some software.

So has anyone encountered this problem, if how did you fix it?

Thank you for your help.

Can you still access/open the OST file? If so, I think you can just create a new PST file, open the OST file, and copy the messages right over.

The outlook.ost file is on hdd1 which crashed. I have pulled the ost file off and now am trying to retrieve its data from a different laptop.

I have used Recovery Toolbox for Outlook to convert from ost to pst, but to view the results I must purchase. Also it can save individual emails as .eml files.

I have tried using the Kernel* software but returns errors. I have used scanpst.exe but it returns errors too, presumably because the ost file is over 2GB.

I just need someway of viewing the data

could you not just setup a profile in outlook and let it create the ost? Then once that is done, close outlook and replace the ost with the existing one. I have done this once in tha past for a troublesome ost issue.

Also there is a scanost tool as well as the scanpst. That should be used on ost rather than the scanpst

I recently had a client that moved from hosted Exchange to a general IMAP solution. It's easiest to just open the exchange e-mail (even if he is not connected to exchange, all old e-mails will be there) and export the e-mails to a pst. I don't really see any use of an OST to PST converter...

edit: Didn't really read the part of the OST coming from a crashed harddrive. I suggest you try DarDar's solution, create a "fake" exchange account (doesnt need to be connected) and then replace the OST file it creates with urs and try to export.

scanost.exe no longer available in Office 2010 (see http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc179110.aspx)

although I didn't specify in my original post which version of office I had.

"could you not just setup a profile in outlook and let it create the ost? Then once that is done, close outlook and replace the ost with the existing one. I have done this once in tha past for a troublesome ost issue."

I am working on this, and will reply back with results.

Thanks to all for their comments and advice.

Use Export manual method to convert OST in PST without any cost. Below are steps of Export method, read them carefully and use:
  • Launch Microsoft Outlook
  • Click File tab, then click Open > Import.
  • Now In Import and Export Wizard, choose an action to perform: Export to a file.
  • Click Next.
  • Now select Outlook data file (.pst) in the list, and click Next.
  • Select the mailbox folder that you want to export from. click Next.
  • Now you can see the selected PST file. Also, you can check other options given there. Click Finish to start the process.
After this you can check the new Outlook data file at you defined location.
