Hi
I have yet another problem, i have a laptop which is connecting to the router both wirelessly and through the ethernet port, it shows connected and receives the first few packets but after that nothing, i have previously removed malware, i have checked and double checked for leftover virus checker files, ive used D7 to reset winsock and release/ renew ip address/ adapter & reset hosts file, ive checked registry and temp folders, i have run ip config and everything seams to be in order, ip address, dchp & dns are all assigned ok, i habe tried to manually assign ip, dns & dchp - same result, i have tried another computer on network - works fine, i have changed the router - same fault, i can ping the router and get recieved pacets ok but anything else comes back 100% loss, meant to mention its an xp machine and ive tried system restore with no success, Ive tried safe mode with networking but still no good, Any help would be most appreciated.

Are you able to connect to the internet, through the router using a different computer or device? The problem may be the router settings, or the router itself. Also, just for fun... is it hooked up properly? If it's DSL, are the filters on correctly?

Yes perfect connection and internet access, router is for bt infinity (fibre optic broadband) and it wasnt working at the clients home or back here at my workshop

I've recently being fixing a problem like this, Internet was connected, but no traffic flow, all pcs worked elsewhere, we still don't know why it stopped working but think it was down to the ISP settings as it all if a sudden started to work again.

Dhcp not resolving web address

To follow on i've found out a little bit more information on the fault, I have worked out that I can ping google's IP address and get a reply however when i try to ping www.google.com or enter the ip address in the browser I have no connection, At this point I suspect that the DHCP client in not resolving the web address, any suggestions would be most appreciated?
Thanks

Looking at your original post most of it is covered but you don't mention checking if the proxy has been checked/reset?

So that narrows it down to DNS....if other PCs on this same network behind this same router are working...it's not an ISP issue nor is it a router/network settings issue....since those other computers are working fine. You can narrow it down to this one computer...or the connection between this one computer and the router.

Due to this PC being able to get replies if it pings a public IP address, but no name resolution...I'd start with DNS and winsock issues.

Yes the proxy has also been reset, i have a feeling it has something to do with registry, does anyone know how to eeset this or check the registry values?

I would check your dns settings if you can ping the ip of google but not the address the problem will be DNS

DHCP only gives your computer an ip address

Ive checked the dns and its exactly the sane as another fully operational machine, ive tried a manual assigned setup but still no good im really pulling my hair out with this

DHCP only gives your computer an ip address

DHCP typically hands out the subnet mask, the default gateway, and DNS...sometimes WINS. We'll assume subnet and gateway are correct since he's getting replies to pinging a public IP address. And I'd assume DHCP is correct since it appears other workstations on the network work just fine. But technically...DHCP gives out more than just the computers IP address.

was keeping it simple but yes it does more than that but does not resolve web addresses as the problem here:)

Yes ive tried it with wlan on and off while cabled, if its not dhcp what else can it be? Everything else looks Perfect when mirrored against a known good machine on the same network but it just resolving the url and i cant see why

If your getting a local ip address then dchp is ok

Since its taken this long i would run a system file check just for the hell of it.

If its not a dhcp problem then any ideas i have already replaced the tcpip stack etc so in therory that should all be ok, i have already run sfc but as yet have had no success its a real brain teaser

You can rule out DHCP by giving it a static address.

Can you visit the router's config page?
What does nslookup tell you about the DNS server?

I hav visited the routers settings page and reset all to default still no good, i have tried another 2 different routers which are working fine with my own machines, nslookup is telling me default server: unknown and address is 127.0.0.1, i have also noticed that when i ping google.com i get the following error: Ping request could not find host www.google.com Please check rhe name and try again, i have reset winsock again, reset hosts file, flushed and registered dns but still no good
