Connecting a Mac to Wireless Network

I don't have a lot of Mac experience, so I hope you'll excuse me if I sound ignorant. Cuz I am.

Anyway, one of my clients bought a MacBook, and he's trying to connect it to his wireless g router. He selected the correct SSID and put in the WEP password. He left the network name blank, because I didn't put a network name on the router. (This router doesn't even have the option.) Airport is telling him it can't connect. Does he have to have a network name? Is there something else I'm overlooking?

In the top right on the tool bar, there is the airport status icon. When you click on that does the drop down menu list his network name? If his network does not have a name it should be named something.

The Airport drop-down shows the network SSID. When he selects that, it opens a dialog box that asks for a "network name" and WEP password.
