Computer not starting

I have a situation where a customer said he would come into his computer room every morning to start working on his computer, and seeing as his computer would be left on all night he would just move the mouse and the comp should've come back from sleep mode. However, it started not doing this and he would be forced to shut down by holding the power button down. Then sometimes holding the power button wouldn't shut things down but the comp would just restart while the power button was being pressed. So he would be forced to pull the power cord out and put it back in to start it up.

So he bought it in to me and the comp has not wanted to turn on at all (except for once after leaving it all night). I have tried testing the PS which is fine, I've pulled out everything from the mobo including RAM, PCI network card, video card, hdd, dvd drive and tried it but same thing. (I try turning it on, it wouldnt boot up, all fans start though including CPU fan). One thing to note is that if I unplug the comp while it is running, the next time i try to turn it off again, pressing the power button is sufficient if i hold it for 4 seconds. Otherwise it restarts while the button is being pressed.

Personally I would replace the PSU with a known good one despite it testing as fine.

And check for caps on MB. They might not be bulging to splitting point but see if any are anything other than flat.

No luck, I replaced PS, checked for bad caps and didnt find any. The comp still doesn't seem to output video, and when i go to turn it off after trying it, by pressing the power button, it restarts after 4 secs.
i should mention that (before) i also tried swapping RAM sticks at one point, so I've tried both. I've also tried taking the CMOS battery out, pressing the power button a couple times, leaving the comp for about half an hour, putting the battery back in and trying it. No go.

Actually having re-read your symptoms and what you've swapped out/removed I'd be def inclined to say its a MB fault.

More so given the power button scenario - MB seems No1 suspect now!

Do you think there might be a point in taking out the mobo and setting it on something and pluggin it in and seeing what happens?

Not quite sure what you mean by setting it on something?

What you could try as a very long shot is access BIOS and set everthing as default just in case its got some bizarre power setting.

Still think MB main suspect though:)

Not sure what this would accomplish. Especially if it isn't part of a diagnostic routine.

checking for shorts against a case/standoff

Ya, the stuff in bold is needed for video...

do you have an internal speaker hooked up, and does it beep with no ram?

The comp does not beep with no RAM, no. And ur right tempusfugit, I was thinking of taking the mobo out in case its touching against the case and shorting something out. But I dont think I will. I think i will tell the customer tomorrow that the mobo is dead and that he is looking at a replacement mobo or comp.
