The machine was working fine and the user put it into sleep mode. When attempting to restart the machine it failed and the screen was black and the caps lock light was slow blinking. It either slow blinked continuously or it could be a single blink with a pause continuously. The f12 key is also lit up.

The system is running Windows 7. The user tried the hard reset of removing the battery and holding the power switch for more than 30 seconds and it didn't help.

I removed the hard drive and I am backing it up. It seems fine.

What is the most likely cause of the failure?

Some have suggested overheating it so that it will turn itself off and this has cured some machines. Is this a good idea?

You might want to reseat all the plug in modules includng memory. I would also pull heat sync then clean old thermal paste off and apply new. I've seen the paste squish out from between cpu and heart sync from excess heat. This would help prevent a call back for the laptop giving a thermal error or other quarky issues.

No, not really.

I've used the same "technique" before but you have to understand whats going on and why it's not usually a good idea. I did it because the customer didn't care about the machine, and was willing to take the chance.

When you wrap it up in a towel and "over heat" it, you are essential doing a very half arsed reflow of some of the solder joints. Problem is that not only is it not a very good reflow of the joints, but you are also heating everything else up as well including caps and other components that might be sensitive to very high temps.

The other thing to understand is that even if this does work, its usually a very temporary fix with the original problem replicating quickly.

I actually saw this fix described for the problem I am having as well as for the xbox.

Brandonkick,

What should be done instead?

Get a good heat gun and some Kester 951 liquid flux. Something like a Wagner paint removing heat gun.

Put a few drops flux on and around the chipset that is bad.

Slowly heat the back side of the board by moving around gun so that everything get covered. About a minute.

The flip over to chipset side and do the same heat up for about a minute. Then turn gun on high and move around but concentrate on the chip each time you get close to it, I do this for about 4-7 mins.

You can see a lot of videos on doing reflows on Youtube, everyone does it a bit different. Highly recommend watching some videos before attempting this, this is kind of shadetree for a fix, but it works.

Been doing this on PS3/Xbox and an occasional MOBO onboard video. Works every time. Did this on my PS3 over a year ago still runs great.

This level of work is too much for me. If I fix this problem, there are likely to be other issues on this computer. The hard drive is good so I'll have the user get a new computer and transfer the stuff from the old system.

Brandonkick is correct that it's all the other components that weren't bad might have heat damage. I've never tried overheating myself but seen what damage a clogged up exhaust port can do. Heat and electronics don't work together. One of the most common issues I see with clients trying the reset is pulling the battery and pressing power but never disconnect the power cord. If reset done properly doesn't work there is hardware issue with the laptop.
