I had a call today from a lady that said her picture folder on her laptop was flashing and no matter what icon she clicks on it opens the picture folder. I had her run a scan with malwarebytes, avg and superantispyware. They all came up with nothing. She called back and said she reboots and all is fine until it goes into hibernate then when she turns it back on then the recycle bin icon will be flashing and no matter what icon she clicks on the recycle bin opens..After going into hibernate it's always a different icon and always the same results..Has anyone ever run accross this before? She is bringing the computer to me tomorrow so I really don't have to many specs on it yet. It is running XP Home with SP3..

Sorry guys it took so long to reply as I have been away for a few days..I tried the "memtest" and "system file check" and all came out ok. It seems now that the keys on the keyboard are not right. If she types an H it opens another program and the P is now caps lock. She did have speedrunner trojan that has been removed now, but I haven't had a chance to talk with her yet to see if there has been any improvment. Will update on this soon. Thanks for your help so far.

Have you tried booting into a UBCD for windows and do a typing test there. It could just be something odd with her OS.

Well finally after another week and a half (this person lives 70 miles from me) I have had a chance to do everything suggested here and the laptop seems fine. I sent it back to her and she said it was acting up again. After many questions she tells me she uses a PS/2 mouse on it at home. I had her disconnect the mouse and all is well again. That was a new one on me but seems to have solved the problem. Thanks to all for your help..

Well done, you got the result in the end; bit of a pain when the client lives so far away..

1) If something isn't working right, try using a LiveCD to see if its your OS making the problems.
2) Try running the computer with the minimum peripheral components connected (kb/mouse); and then slowly add in components to see if one of them are acting up
3) Google is your friend

Did she plug the mouse into the keyboard port?!?!?!?!?!?! Never did it myself but it might be sending interesting codes to it. ;) Or perhaps after a hibernate it forgets it's a mouse and starts acting like it's a keyboard? Just a thought.
