I am on this job that seemed simple (connect a laptop and wireless printer to the network) so I decided to take it (business is a little slow lol) I don't usually take networking jobs but as I said. Easy right?

Problem 1: manager doesn't know wep kep and nothing is connected wirelessly
Problem 2: manager doesn't know router username or pass..

Ok so I reset the router connected everything and now everything is working fine....ish

Internet ... works
Printer ... works
Pda ... works
computers see eachother as needed

Wep security ... failed

It is a dlink wireless router and comcast business class.. now that I got everything going I can't get into the dlink router to set security it is supposed to be 192.168.0.1 but it keeps saying page not found and when I do ipconfig it shows as 10.1.10.1 .. comcast business gateway - which has no security settings ...

Does anyone know a way to get past comcast and connect to the dlink router so I can turn this guys security on?

Sounds like two DHCP servers on one network segment. And you may have more than one device doing routing. Disable the DHCP server on the device that is NOT doing any routing and then bridge both devices.

Also if it is DSL sometimes you need to set up the DSL router as a bridging device. If I am not mistaken. Last thing is.....

Who the heck uses WEP if they don't have to. Do you need WEP?

Are you trying to connect remotely. If so you will need to set up port forwarding or use something like LogMeIn Rescue.

I think that perhaps the router in question was set up as an AP with the DHCP turned off the RJ-45 will be in a regular computer switch port and not an [internet] port.

Thank you very much, i will try that first thing in the morning.

i dont usually deal with wireless networking and the manager told me he wanted wep

he needs some form of security because it has to have the pda's and laptop wireless and there is a database of encrypted client info on the server do you have a suggestion on a form of security i could suggest to him?

Ya know that thought hadn't even occurred to me, thank you again your post was very helpful to me

oh and no i'm not trying to connect remotely just trying to work around this horrible setup to add a computer and printer (tried talking him into letting me do this from scratch but he said he couldn't justify paying for a network setup twice to his boss)

WEP is pretty much a joke anymore security wise if that's what he's worried about. The only real reason people use it is to limp along some legacy devices that won't support WPA/WPA2?

I'm sure all this is easily correctable, but more details are going to be needed. Would be nice to have some info on the Comcast modem also.

The Laptop is Win7, the PDA's are Windows Mobile 5 and the printer is a fairly new brothersoft..

the wired computers are all windows xp, im sorry i dont have the information here on the comcast modem but if what i try tomorrow doesnt work i will make sure to copy it down.

router is a d-link
model#: dir-615

all i remember offhand is the comcast modem connects to the comcast business gateway

Edit:
and again thank you all for your help and time, i think after this job i will leave the networking to someone else for a while until i practice lol

I'm pretty sure the gateway is wireless. More than likely when they set it up, the secured it. No need for the D-link router. They can call Comcast to reset the key for the gateway and they should be all set.

Just wanted to let all of you know how it went this morning.

The Comcast Modem isn't wireless..

all of the wiring is everywhere, completely unorganized.
so i was not able to see how it all ran but i finally figured it out, the D-Link router ran through a computer that the modem ran into.

So all i had to do to get to the D-Link Gateway was to unplug every line connected to the router except 1 pc and run these commands

ipconfig /release
ipconfig /renew
ipconfig /flushdns
ipconfig /registerdns

then run ipconfig /all and the default gateway showed as 192.168.0.1 .. added wpa security and then reconnected all of the other lines re ran those commands and it changed the default gateway back to 10.1.10.1 all internet and networked paths work as well as wireless and security..

thank you all very much for your help.. i hope this problem helps someone else realize your worst enemy in this job can be your self over thinking the problem.. just calm down, sit back and take a simple approach to everything!

I apologize, I meant the business gateway was the configuration page to the modem.. sorry for not making that clear but anyhow I thank you very much for your help and your time I really appretiate it
