Hello all. I have a client that connect to the internet, I think I know the answer but need some reassurance before having them spend money.

Here's the situation - Residential client has a hardwired network. All of the jacks are operating except for one and the computer doesn't get an IP, it shows 0.0.0.0. When I connect a different Cat5 cable to the router where the dead jack is connected, I'm able to get an IP and get out to the internet.

I've tested the jack with my laptop as well and do not get an IP address. Is it safe to assume that it is a bad cable? I'm just nervous because the cable is run from the basement to the 2nd floor of the house and I don't do cable runs so I would have to contract the work out. But I don't want the customer to spend that money and the connection still not work.

Thanks for your help.

I would plug the suspected bad cable into a known good port to make sure the symptoms move with the cable. Cables typically don't just go bad. It's likely just a bad connection at the jack or at the switch. It might be a be a good time to buy a network cable tester.

By the way, the maximum recommended length for a CAT 5 cable is 100 meters. It's not longer than that, is it? Do you have a patch panel or is it direct wiring form the jack to the switch?

Connect your laptop directly to the Switch/Router (on the saem port as that cable) then you'll know if the cable is faulty, or just a faulty port on the Router.

I was actually purchasing the tester when I received your reply notification. Turns out that it was a bad connection at the jack, which was my second guess. I'm glad that I didn't go with my first. Thanks for your help.
