If someone has Windows account linked to their Microsoft account and they forgot and are unable to recover the password, is there any way to change that to a local account(non MS linked) without being able to log in?

I have been telling people it can't be done and have been using the work around to add a local account, then transfer the data from the Microsoft linked account.

Have you tried PCUnlocker?

Not a confirmed result, but I had a Windows 10 machine recently that was reported (by the client) to be a Microsoft account and unable to change the forgotten password. PCUnlocker cleared the password and when I logged in, it was set as a local account. It certainly appeared to be a Microsoft account at the original login screen, but that's the bit I can't confirm.

I previously tried ntpasswd, which has never failed me for a local account, but it wouldn't clear the user account password.

Give it a try but I believe a microsoft account password can only be reset or recovered through microsoft. PCUnlocker claim they can reset a local or active directory password.

PCUnlocker can only bypass the Microsoft Account. It can't change the password and I don't think it can remove the M$ account from the machine.

What do you mean by bypass, but not remove?
This article suggests that the password will be temporarily changed to 'Password123', but that is not my experience. In my case, the password was removed, which is why I'm uncertain as to the status of the account in the first place.

That article also makes no reference to rebooting the machine without Internet access, which must be necessary to prevent authentication with MS servers (thus forcing use of the modified local cached password)?

There is no way to remove or change a Microsoft Account password except online. This program can bypass the password prompt and backdoor your way into the program.

Do you think it bypasses it by changing it to a local (non Microsoft user linked ) account?
