CD drive problems

The cd drive in this HP DV9810US will not show up in anything but device manager. I had it working by going through computer>manage> and assigning it, but now it will not show up there. I have also deleted the upper and lower filters.

The drive itself is good. Windows vista 64 bit.

Ideas?
EDIT:
have also reinstalled the drivers for it, and tried a different cd drive

According to the HP support forums this is a common problem for this model of laptop, and they reccommend that you read this page for help.

  • 1) See if the drive is listed in Device Manager (troubleshoot based on what you see).
  • 2) Reset Power: Unplug power cord, press Power button for 10 seconds.
  • 3) Check power and data cables attached to the drive and look in the BIOS for the drive name.
  • 4) Remove upper/lower filters (see below).
  • 5) Reinstall burning software
  • 6) Get and CD/DVD drive firmware updates if available (to prevent missing drives in the future (I assume)).
  • 7) Use MS System Restore to go back to a time when it was working.

The device is listed normally in device manager, i have removed said filters, ill try resetting the power and uninstalling anything that has to do with dvd's

this is a laptop btw, the support link brought me to some **** for a desktop hehe

Resetting the power and uninstalling any dvd software got me nowhere. Replacing the lowerfilters didnt do anything. I don't know where else I can go with it.

How have you confirmed that the drive is good? If you haven't done so, I would try it in another laptop to makre sure that the drive is ok.

Did using the alternative drive have the same results?

Yes, same results. I am sure this drive works because I had it working through multiple reboots/discs, but the customer got it home and it is back to the same problem

It's not the drive at fault, if the problem still occurs with a different drive. Is the drive recognised in the BIOS?

Yes it's recognized in BIOS and device manager as working properly. Just not anywhere else.

This is going out on a limb and most likely isn't the problem, but I might as well say it.

Highlight the device, right click it and hit Properties then go to Driver and see if "Enable" is an option.

If the BIOS detects the drive, it sounds more like a driver isssue to me. Could the DMA be set incorrectly for the controller?

Already checked hehe

I'm not sure. I've done what I could do, it's deffinetly got to be a driver/software issue though. I tried a system restore but it wouldn't restore.

Have a look through Device manager for IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers, and find the CD-ROM and see what mode the DMA is currently set too.

If you can access it through a command prompt I would suspect Local Group policy settings. For your info, run gpedit.msc then follow User Configuration, Administrative Templates, Windows Components, Windows Explorer - "Hide these specified drives in My Computer"

yo Gunz. "hehe" ??? Keep it Pro, bro

Still not having any luck with it. Hmm..
