Can't use Gmail POP to send alerts from devices?

I've never had any issues setting up my Gmail account to receive alerts from various devices; Cobian backup, ReadyNAS, etc.

Clearly Google has recently made changes to increase security & I'm no longer able to do so; I get failure error messages. I was finally able to get cobian working by generating an app-specific password for that one device, but I definitely do NOT want to do this for dozens of different devices, for obvious reasons. Heck, even for my iPad, iPhone, etc. it's a headache & hassle.

I even tried creating a separate gmail account specifically for receiving these alerts in the hopes that I could decrease some of the security settings so that I wouldn't run into this same problem, but no luck.

What's the trick to using Gmails POP servers?

Thanks

If you're using Google Apps for Business, you can send unauthenticated email to an email address in the same domain

you may have to enable insecure apps to login and use gmail smtp

I had been using Gmail SMTP on port 587 with StorageCraft Shadow Protect for over a year without an issue.
About a month ago, the Gmail account started to receive one warning from the Gmail server on a daily basis indicating that unauthorized access may have been attempted.
The IP addresses that attempted to login were legitimate (I think).
After a couple of weeks of these warnings I logged into this GMail account using a browser and I was forced to change my password.
Now, I have many backups that are attempting to use the wrong password and cannot send notifications via Gmail SMTP.
I just checked the settings mentioned above and it is 'on' meaning it should allow less secure apps.

Yes I've enabled both POP & IMAP, logged in & turned ON the "allow less secure apps" and am still having the problem.

I've tried with 587 & 465, SSL & TLS, and still no luck....any other ideas?

I have experienced this issue with both GMail Free and GApps. I cannot see any common thread on why it works or doesn't. Easiest thing to do is just register a domain (or use your existing one) and set up an address or addresses for this purpose. You can also run your own SMTP server if necessary or even use the client's ISP smtp server.

Change the password again, back to what it was? Of course, Google may keep a record of previous password hashes.

Don't use Gmail
... has a lot of merit.

@allanc If you factor in the time it takes to keep up with the shifting sands that are Google properties, you would probably come out well ahead with a paid email service. Fastmail or Runbox, for example: one service, done well.

Yes, Gmail does keep a record of prior passwords.
We actually have our own domain Email hosted externally.
Setting up a separate Email address through the domain is not an issue.
To be honest, I do not remember why we started using Gmail instead of the domain.

Just created a paid google apps email on my domain & it works fine...

Thanks for the help guys!
