Can't update Windows after reinstall

When I click to do an express update, it checks for a few seconds then says that it "cannot display the page you are trying to view". Error number: 0x8024400A
I tried some of the fixes I found online. Deleting the Windows Update.log file and unchecking "automatically detect settings" under LAN settings. Still having this problem. What else might be causing this problem?

Did you try it with the custom update. It usually offers more help or error messages.

D7 has some WU fixes that might help. Is this activated ? Also did you try deleting all the SoftwareDistribution\Download folder stuff ? Check all services running ?

Yes it was activated. I used the Internet Explorer > Windows Update.

I wound up doing a manual install of Service Pack 3. Now it seems to be working. Very bizarre because I have never come across this problem before.

I have (a few years back) and ended up doing exactly what you did; manual install of SP3. Just one of those things I guess.

LOL, thank the Maker for Service Packs. Many a time I have "fixed" a computer with a service pack. We had a machine in last week with all kinds of weird TCP issues, so I tried all 20,000 fixes and nothing, but then did a SP3 and VIOLA ! Back in business.

Whatever it takes to get the computer back to the customer and the money into my pocket.

It's strange because the Dell Windows CD (w/ SP2) and the Dell drivers CD that came with this Octoplex GX620 were both flawed and useless. Any average Joe would have given up. I had this Windows update problem, and the video drivers on the drivers CD AND on Dell's site were useless. I had to ID the video card on PCIDatabase.com and find the driver from Nvidia's site.

I had the same exact problem today. Weird.

I had this same problem earlier this week on an XP machine. I had to walk a client through a factory restore and have her download Teamviewer so I could connect and finish setting up her PC they way she wanted it. I tried updating it via WU and it was a no-go. I downloaded SP3 and installed it and the system crashed, so she brought it in the next morning. It ended up being what I originally thought it was: a bad drive. It had a one bad sector!

I ended up downloading SP3 from M$ Technet and installing via disc. Machine is now updating fine.

When nothing works I dust off dial-a-fix. Still works.
