Not sure if I'm in the right area here, but I have a bunch of 4gb store n go flash drives. Everytime I try to boot from them I get a boot error. I've tried the kaspersky rescue disk, memtest, sardu, my easeus todo rescue usb. Nothing seems to work except using them to install windows operating systems. I've tried formating them every which way also, nada. What am I doing wrong, never had this problem. My older flash drives just work, no muss no fuss.

Could be alot of things. Just a few questions here:

What are you trying to boot on? make model ect...

Does the computer have EFI ect ?

What O/S are you using to burn the usb disks and what program?

Any error messages?

I have linux in the shop and the same usb sticks as you. I use liveusb-creator to make mine.

Could be something in your hardware that just isn't linux friendly (rare but happens). I have one server that always fails to boot any Debian builds, but runs others linux OS's fine.

It's the same on every laptop or PC I've used them on, always says boot error. I have a verbatim 4gb and a transcend 4g too that does the same thing. I'll try the liveusb-creater and get back to you. I'm also using windows 8 to make my usb drives. Weird because my older smaller drives work great every time.

You sir have a good problem, this one is tricky...

You'll probably say you already did this...but have you put these images on your older USB's lately since doing this and seeing if maybe your images might be the problem?

Yes I've tried the images on both, it seems as though only some live usb programs will work. I did get sardu to work with my trancend stick, but not with others. Damn odd thing, my older flash drives work with everything. I guess I'll need to buy the same kind and not by 5 packs of cheep crap:(

My bench rig is a custom build on a Gigabyte board. It's given me 0 problems, EXCEPT that it absolutely will NOT boot from usb, and/or when it does, it goes at MAYBE 1.1 speeds. It's got that craptastic NEC first gen USB3 spec, and I think that is part of the issue. It also will ONLY boot flash drives that are formatted FAT32.

Runs everything fine once it's on, but it simply won't boot to usb. I've gone round and round with it trying.

I could not find the article but somewhere I read that the USB drive to meet windows 8 certification had to appear as a hard fixed disk instead of removable storage.

This has been known to cause problems.

This is in the firmware of the disk.

Just a guess...
