Issue: Clicking "Save As" in Word 2007 on WinXP - NOTHING HAPPENS. The save as dialog never pops up.

Launching winword.exe /a lets save as work... So I tried disabling all addons (there is only one, a pdf converter) which doesn't help. So...

If I delete the normal.dotm and relaunch word, it works again. If I use the prompt to save as... then close Word, it prompts to save changes to global template. If I save, the same issue occurs again. If I don't save, of course I am always prompted to save it again on subsequent runs of Word.

When viewing macros in normal.dotm, THERE ARE NONE. I can't figure out what "changes" are being saved to normal.dotm to cause save as to stop functioning again. But the file size does grow when the template is saved...

I even tried making normal.dotm read only but then Word complains about THAT on closing too.

Deleting HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\12.0\Word\Data doesn't help either.

winword /r doesn't help...

'Any ideas?

Have you tried using the repair feature in control panel. Or within word click on the office icon - resources - run office diagnostics.

Best of luck

Does this happen on all users on the machine?

Hmm... what if it does or does not? Where would I go from there I wonder...

Checking this occurred to me, however my user is on a domain and at the time I didn't have credentials to try and log in anyone else... I will check on that next time I connect, though...

We had issues with a law firm where the roaming profile for certain people caused all sorts of weird issues with office. I don't have access to the notes any more as we no longer support them but it's another piece of information in the puzzle, oh the joys of compare and contrast.

edit: are you getting the same issue with other office programs or just word?

edit2: brain really is slowing down, I should know better than to go on forums at night. We had a copy of the normal template stored on the server. If save as works on the other profiles then copy the normal template from their profile to your one.

I had simliar issue to this a few weeks ago. In this case it was PowerPoint and when you clicked 'Save As' the dialog box would appear, but then it would just hang. Re-installing and running a repair made no difference. If I changed the default location to dave files in it worked.

I found a MS knowledge base article which explained the issue. the resolution was to delete the entire registry for that version off office, so that when you ran it, it did the initial set up like when you first install it. I can't find article, was sure I placed it into my favourites.

Try creating a new user account see if it works I'm sure it will
I did this for a problem I couldn't fix
Migrated all user docs, email everything only took 20 mins
Problem solved
Then finally when you’re sure you got everything you could delete old account

It's on a domain so will work bit different to this :)

I had this problem a couple of years ago. I tried everything already suggested in this thread, and more with no success.

I ended up doing a N&P as I had spent too many hours trying to make it work.

Sorry for not being able to provide an alternative solution...

Any progress with this one?

Unfortunately, no. I haven't revisited the issue on the affected machine because I don't want to keep bothering my client and wasting my time without success :\ and mostly because I've had no new ideas...

Luckily the client has backed off and I think is content with deleting the normal.dotm every time they know they'll need to do a save as...

I'm thinking if they do call back on it, I'll give it another remote support hour telling them up front it's N&P if I can't fix it within that time frame.
