Here is a utility for XP/WIN7 to fix the " C:\windows\system32\config\system missing or corrupt"-error. ConfigRepair will ONLY work if you boot via a LIVE-CD, although you can still run the Utility from ANY drive, as long as its booted via Live-Cd.... If THIS doesnt fix the prob, a re-install of Windows might be the best option, or if Windows-7 REPAIR cd can't fix )

PS: Boot from a LIVE-CD and run the "app". Just remember the ASSIGNED DRIVE-letter for the damaged Drive/OS, as you will need it to "guide" ConfigRepair to the "drive to be fixed"...

Download "ConfigRepair.zip" (705Kb) below...

Nice program, will give it a try on the next xp machine, where this error occurs.

However, scanning it with kaspersky, it comes up as a virus - HEUR:Trojan.Win32.Generic

Interesting, Nige. I scanned it with SAS. MBAM, and Avast and it came up clean. Kaspersky doing a better job, or false positive?

For anyone who might not be aware of this the config message and it's suggestion you have to repair install is not always right; sometimes you just have to fix a problem. Sometime back I got that with a bad cd cable; changed the cable and it was all hunky-dory.

Virustotal.com flagged 2, but I'm not to worried as most of my utils from NirSoft etc get picked up as dodgy by many Av. If the tool gets the job done thats +1 with me.

I compiled this tool espesialy when your "config"-directory ( under \Windows\System32" ) is completely GONE or CORRUPTED!...I agree, there ARE other methods, but for a completely GONE/CORRUPTED config? ...try this :)

Thats a "false positive"...you can send it to kaspersky so they can "add" the code...as i have compiled this little app myself...
HEUR means HEURISTIC...meaning if it "acts" like a virus, the program will say it IS ( where in actual fact it is not )

PS: I always "disable" my heuristic in my virus scanner...especially for these reasons...you'll notice the same with some "keygens"...and in the meantime, the keygene is NOT a virus...

The hard drive is probably bad when you get this message, so there are probably a lot of other bad/corrupt files all over the place.

Even fixing the registry hive so Windows boots isn't going to fix the flakey mess.

Latest Update...The proggie now have TWO ways of fixing incase the first one fails...
D7? ...never heard of it as i compile all my own utilities :D

So do I! A like-minded individual! Good to meet you!

Yes... this is how it would do it. If System Restore is turned off... well then... to bad... so sad!

Yeah, that's always a bummer!

Which reminds me, I need to update that function (RegReplace) in D7 to work with the registry backup in Vista/7... just been lazy about it since it's a lot easier to do manually on those platforms e.g. copy * .. from recovery console...

Here is a utility ( very plain and simple, nothing to brag about, but does the job ) compiled by myself for the above error. If THIS doesnt fix the prob, a re-install of Windows is needed ( For WinXP only )

PS: Boot from an EXTERNAL device, and run the "app"...OR...put the "damaged" drive into another computer...but just remember the ASSIGNED DRIVE-letter for the damahed Drive/OS, as you will need it to "guide" ConfigRepair to the "non-bootable" drive...

MAJOR update...added 2nd way of recovery incase first method fails...

Why exactly would you need an app for this? Replace the system hive with a previous system hive ...

...that's what this does...only you dont need to be TOO much of a tech to use this. For you it might be an easy task...for others not.
PS: This app is to be used with a LIVE-CD ( if you can't access your PC pass the "black" screen...)
