Business Identity and Website

This is one of those odd situations that could go in a couple areas of the forum. Due to some recent developments I have had a bit of a setback that is requiring me to come up with a new business name, (thankfully I haven't registered yet) and of course that comes down to how I do my website(s). There is a little bit of an identity crisis. I am trying to think outside of the box a little, come up with something professional and kind of universal (since I will be hopefully have home and business clients) I also need to make sure that I can get a domain name that fits the name and that there isn't a similar business using a similar domain...and the challenges go on and on.

Here is my website related question. I have decided I am going to have a "home users" site and a "business users" site. This will hopefully separate things a bit and will allow me to create a site better themed for each of those user groups. Of course I will have only one business name.

Is it a bad idea, or unheard of if I were to register with the state as <my business name> but then have a "business users" website that is either "mybusinessname.com" or "notmybusinessname.com" and then for the "home users" website have something like "somethingneerdy.com"? Granted this means paying for 2 domains, but I am just curious. The other reason I am wondering is because when coming up with a business name that's more "professional" along with a matching domain name, that has been nearly impossible. However, I have come up with many "nerdy" (perhaps not as "professional") business name ideas with matching or similarly matching domain names that would flaunt my nerdiness/geekiness with pride but I feel those names may not be so good to use when trying to get business users on board. Have any of you had that issue? Am I thinking way to hard about this? My head feels like mush with all of the names I have been trying to think of. Im starting to hate words or the combination of words now.

I think having a separate website for business an residential clients is a smart move. I like your idea of keeping the business website using your business name. I tend to like names that are "color"-"noun"-"word that describes your services". Like "Blue Sail Technology Services" or "Red Carpet IT" or "Gold Star Consulting". The color in the name makes it vivid in someone's mind and gives you a branding identity. Then for the residential website, I strongly recommend trying to get a location-based domain name, like "Minneapolis Computer Repair" or "Duluth Technology Services", which will really help with SEO and make it easy for people to find you.

Oddly enough, the original name I was going to use was "Code Red Technology Solutions" and even though I like it, it is just to long and if I did something like coderedtechnologysolutions.com/business or /home, it just makes it that much longer. oh yeah and if I eventually become an LLC, then that has to be added to my name also...One I recently came up with, that just so happens to fit your suggested criteria is "Blue Line IT Solutions". I do kind of like it but not completely sure yet.

I'm trying to stay away from terms like "computer repair", "fix", etc. since I will be trying to be an MSP also.

Well I may have some ideas. I had a list of about 20-30 business names and had to have my wife look it over to see if there was anything that seemed to pop out at her. Thankfully, she came up with a few she thought sounded good, and I think I agree. These have matching domains too. So my narrowed down options now are
Sentry System Solutions
Sentry Tech Solutions
Shield Technology Solutions
Guardian Tech Solutions

It's a start. :) It still blows my mind how much I came up with (more than the list I created) and domains were taken for them no matter how unique they seemed to be for me. One example...whitsolutions.com WH is my initials with IT and the "solutions". well it too was taken....lol

One of my million bits of "useless information" (as my wife lovingly says) is that the name IKEA actual was created through a similar format. IK was the founders initials and then EA was the initials of the city he was born in. ;) You're welcome....lol
