How do you attract new business clients? I was thinking of an in your face approach like running a virus scan to show the client the computer is infected but I don't think I could get that much face time with the possible client. Any ideas or suggestions?
 
I sent out a letter to about a dozen small businesses around my area that had my services on there and basically a bit of a sales pitch about how I could help their business by maintaining their computers and so forth. I also mentioned I could come in for a free consultation. The letter was composed on professional letterhead with my logo. This method worked out quite well for me. I got 4 maintenance contracts and then two referrals in addition.

Face to face is a good method but you need to be short and to the point. Most business owners don't have time to hear a long drawn out sales pitch or sit by the computer and watch you do a virus scan.

Offering business class services would be a start. Most businesses have a wannabe IT person or at least a power user in house who can can install an AV program and run it.
 
What are some examples of business class services?

No offense but with these types of questions are you sure you're ready to start serving businesses? Depending on your knowledge and abilities you should be able to come up with specialized services you would like to offer.

You really need to get some proper technician training and work under a professional computer technician and get some experience before taking clients (residential or business clients for that matter) or starting your own business. We are not flaming you or discouraging you, but being a tech is a WHOLE LOT more than running virus scans.
 
Thanks for the input. Im sorry that I seem to be jumping into this to fast. I will look into getting more experience within the industry before expanding on my own.
 
A lot of my business clients have actually been through referals. I have a client that I got referred to two years ago that has gotton me a ton of business since. Partly because I got him out of a tough spot, after he let a Geek Squad "tech", touch his Raid 5 File server and then tell him the drives were bad and the data was unrecoverable.
Once I got him back up and running, he was so gratefull that he got all his drawings back (he's an architect), that he signed a contract on the spot with me. Now every job that he signs he reccomends me to the owner to do all the IT work, from pulling ethernet cable to setting up networks and installing machines, and then Ive been able to get maintenace contracts from some of them. I go out of my way to keep this guy happy cause he has been an invaluable assett to my business.

I have also been thinking about targeting a marketing campaign toward the small businesses in my area with the theme "is your data secure, are you backing up?". You would be suprised how many small firms do not have any kind of consistent back-up procedure in place, and moreover have no clue what it would cost them, in man-hours, lost revenue and recovery fees if their primary source of data somehow was gone and a back-up was'nt in place.

how did you go about sending the letter out?

Most of them I just sent out through regular mail. There are a few companines within 5 minutes of me in which I went there personally and introduced myself and then left them with the letter.

We are working on a 'press kit' of sorts to do the same thing.
