Broadband internet speed just 54kbps on a 6mbps line

Possibly Ian means the main BT socket. I.e going into the master socket (tester). Then using the filter, router, netbook, and running a speedchecker from there.

Exactly what I mean :) This is when I got the so called BT engineer out.

To be fair he may have fixed it, but when I spoke to him on the phone it was not the impression I got.

It sure sounds as if the extension cable is / was causing the fault.

I had a similar issue on thurs evening at a neighbours. Only that fault was no internet connection at all. Plugged it into the master socket, and it all came to life.

I hate extension cables with a passion, but at times, they are a necessary evil.

Example, pc upstairs, main bt socket in the living room, solution for client, use a long extension cable, then plug the router into that. Instead of calling out a bt guy, or a telephone guy, and say can you put me a new box up here..

Just spoke to my client now. On Friday guy was there for four hours and decided to come back this morning. This morning he decided to just give up on proper testing and started disconnecting different sockets. In the end he discovered it was an unused socket in a bedroom causing the problem, the cable feeding it must have damage some where.

Removed and 6mbps ;)

He still only charged her £65 which I thought was fair though god knows why it took him so long but if I was there it may have been a lot quicker as he wouldn't have had to repeat all the tests.
