Bricked Drive?

Assuming this is the replacement, yup, drive is probably fine, data is borked. Still goes back to "Get out of an OS". Since the drive reports it Model and LBA's correctly, odds are good there is very little to nothing wrong with the drive firmware, or at the very least it is DEFINITELY NOT "bricked"!
I had to google "Asking for cache data failed", but that's happening because your still using a USB adapter. Disconnect that thing, connect directly to SATA, run GSmartControl against it, and it will probably pass. Run MHDD against it, It will probably run just fine. Both of these tools (more MHDD) look at the drive from a low-level drive perspective, with no other software getting in the way. The more you attempt to use any OS, the more potential damage to the data your actually doing, and the more weird results your gonna get. If you are trying to test anything that has to do with Hard Drive "Hardware", never, ever, ever do so from inside any operating system.

Mike, Thank you for posting the logs.

The drive is a : WD 1 tb drive (green) model number WD10EADS.

The drive is recongnized as /dev/sdb and there is one partition named sdb1

You can try mounting the drive at this point:

sudo mkdir /mnt/testdrive

mount -t auto /dev/sdb1 /mnt/testdrive

cd /mnt/testdrive

ls

The drive is basically ok. But you need a sata connection not a usb. You can attempt recovery of files using testdisk or similar software but its doubtful .

BTW - I never test drives thru a USB interface. One reason is smartdata does not work via usb. Always connect them sata. You can purchase an inexpensive sata pci board or just some inexpensive sata hot swap bays with power switches that will help out quite a bit with troubleshooting.

Take care,

"Whoever loves instruction loves knowledge,
But he who hates correction is stupid." - Proverbs 12:1

After taking some time to consider what I've done, how I've done it, the assistance offered here, and the stubbornness which I held onto my premature and unfounded conclusions, I owe you all an apology. I was convinced that my conclusion was correct, when I had failed to properly diagnose the problem in the first place. I made assumptions that I simply never proved. Worse, when questioned about them I stubbornly defended my conclusions instead of listening to your instruction. I was wrong and I regret it.

To those I have offended (@lcoughey, @nlinecomputers, & perhaps others), I publicly and sincerely apologize for my actions. They are, in short, indefensible.

Good Man!

I remember somewhere in the Bible it says "To the fool, Wisdom is but a pricking of their ears". Which basically means that fools hate wisdom. I am glad you are not one of them.

Hope your having a great day,

Wow.... didn't see that coming..... ;) Interesting thread. I've been doing computer repair for more than 15 years and there is no end to my learning curve. I don't feel "qualified" compared to many of the members of Technibble that is why I joined, to learn from others more "qualified" than me. Thanks for being here guys!

THIS is how a thread (question/answer) should go!
ALL professsional......some with more knowledge than others and ALL respectful of each other.
If any of us were "perfect", we wouldn't need to be on this board.
Great job guys!
Makes me proud to be here.
