Boot Up Problem

The computer upon start would ask for the date and time before it hit Windows and sometimes would not boot at all. I replaced the CMOS battery, fixed the settings, and everything seemed fine. The non-boot problem disappeared. I ran it for a whole day with no issues. As a precaution I checked everything. Ran memtest on memory, good. Checked power supply, good. Hard Drive, good. The only thing I didn't check was the chip. When I left for the night I unplugged the power from the back only to come in the next morning and find out the machine won't boot again. So I was stumped. I threw in another CMOS battery and that worked. The computer fired right up. I turned it off and on a half a dozen times with no issue. My next step was to unplug the power cord from the back. I did this, left it off for a few minutes, plugged it back in and then tried to power on with no luck. So that's where I'm at.

I then checked the chip, reapplied thermal paste, although it was already fine but I just wanted to make sure. Swapped out the power supply, still the same issue when unplugging the machine. Any suggestions?

It won't power on at all. Hit the power button and nothing...

I had one that did this, got it going by checking the cmos jumper pins. make sure they're in normal position, you can get the correct setting from the mobo site.

Just checked them and no issues there...

Yep....................

hmmm, if you've pulled everything, memory, pci, etc. systematicly I'd have to think its the mobo, mine did the same thing, cmos clock would not stay set, battery was fine, suddenly it just went dead. I pulled everything and the jumper got it going finally, still the bios clock would still not stay set so I installed a freeware auto clock sync program that would load on boot. I'd like to hear other opinions!

Yeah, I'm thinking it's the motherboard as well. Unless someone else has a trick up their sleeve for me...

Just to toss it in the hat...
Did you check the clearance between the MOBO and the case?
I had one where a solder point was intermittently touching just enough to keep the system from starting I inserted a rubber washer and all was well.

Dell desktops & towers have a flat cable that runs between the front panel board containing the switch, USB etc and the motherboard.

This can get scrunched up and is often the culprit in cases of Dells which start erratically.

Sometimes it's the front panel board itself or the 'poke-me-in' switch that loses a bit of plastic and no longer reaches the microswitch to activate it.

There is a regular Ebay trade in replacement front panels and switches, both new and used. Many will fit several models.

I have a Dimension C521 in at the moment. Just proved a damaged cable by substitution with a cable out of a Dimension 9100, which I have in for a totally different fault.

I have a couple Dell desktops in at the moment. I'll try swapping one out and see if that resolves it. Thanks!

I just wanted to give an update this thread...

@studiot...I switched out the front panel with no luck. So all was left was the board.

I was able to get a replacement board pretty cheap, swapped it out and it resolved the problem. Thanks for everyone's help and suggestions.

Yeah, didn't see anything of the sort. Even once I took it out and got a closer look, everything looked ok.
