Boot Drive is H!

Twice recently, I've installed XP on an HP machine with a bunch of memory reader slots. On both occasions, the boot disk ended up being Drive H: - C,D,E,etc. taken up by the memory slots.

This has caused a problem both times as some software (e.g. SURPRISE some hp drivers) insist on using Drive C:.

Has anyone else run into this?

As I'm writing this, it occurs to me that I may be able to unplug the reader from the MB before installation. HMMMMMM

Yes, this has occurred to me a few times. I just make it a practice to unplug all card readers. So your thought was a good one

This happened to me once and I ended up totally screwing up Windows by trying to change the drive letters around. But this happened to me when I was switching a dead hard drive with a new one that already had XP installed on it. I ended up getting ****** off and reformatting and it worked for me.

or you can go into bios and disable it, that way you don't have to open the machine up.

Change the boot order and the hard drive order in the BIOS perhaps?

During the XP installation, keep creating and deleting partitions (without formatting) and eventually you will have the option to install on C. Done this loads of times when I worked as a field engineer for Dell.
