Just a heads up - don't know if anyone else has seen this but I've had a laptop bought in this morning, and a call from another customer with what looks like an identical issue - also a laptop, and being brought in later.

The laptop is constantly popping up the search box - the mouse pointer jumps down to the search bar by itself - and Bing pages are opening in the default browser, regardless of whether it's open or not. Going into Cortana settings and switching web search off stops it opening web pages but doesn't stop the search box constantly opening.

I've just completed a few quick scans (Rkill, TDSSK, JRT, ADWC, Eset Smart Scan) and nothing untoward has shown up. Update history only shows Windows Defender updates in the last 48 hours.

Anyone else seen it? Just seems odd I've had two (apparently) identical problems called in in the space of an hour.

Just an update on this. I've run MWBAM and SAS - nothing out of the ordinary. SFC - corruptions found & repaired. Tweaking repair - all ok. GSmart - all ok. Rebooted repeatedly, problem still there.
System restore run & rebooted. Suddenly all working ok. Updated (Defender update only), rebooted again and all ok.
Odd one all round, but at least it's working and the customer's happy to have it back quickly. The other machine hasn't come in yet but I'll update when I've seen it. No further calls so it looks like these two are odd cases.

If you google there's actually a registry script you can download as a .bat file that disables it completely. I've used it on a few since sometimes we are using a different AV, but I find sometimes that on Windows 10, Defender gets hung up on an update and won't load it if another AV is installed. So I'll use this to disable it entirely which then lets updates etc complete.

Also, another tip I've found, if you don't use onedrive and don't want it in explorer, check this article out.

Windows 10 is good, and the more i can trim off that I don't use the better.

Thanks for that @ohio_grad_06 - some useful info.

Anyhow, the second machine came in yesterday, popup turned out not be the search box described by the customer but the McAfee "Your cover has run out, send us your money" nag screen (I must work on my understanding of customerese).
Sorted by removing McAfee & installing Eset NOD32. Another happy customer.
