Best chance of recovery

I don't know what the cost is for the guy that lcoughey recommended, but I know you can use $300 DDR for sure.

If the data is of any importance, than $300 is more then reasonable. You have to ask yourself what kind of value you place on saving that data.

A few family photos are one thing, but business critical data? 10, 20, or more years of a lot of family photos?

Just be prepared to lose the data for good, should you choose to try to recover it. I'm not saying you will, but accept it as a possibility.

Once its done I hear rstudio would be a good purchase. Which version should I go for? The license is per machine on non tech so is it physically not going to work if I change my recovery rig or Am I simply not supposed to. Also there's Linux variants which may be useful on parted magic
Have you read the EULA for R-studio? The ones I've read for the various versions say that only the Tech version ($899 USD) can be used for financial gain.

Sometimes I wonder if this is how the system works:
  • Install pirated version of windows or software for client - unethical
  • Install pirated version of windows or software on own system - ethical
  • Fees charged by data recovery professionals with licensed tools, equipment, facilities and experience - unethical
  • Fees charged by technician doing data recovery with software ignoring license or using pirated software - ethical
I know that many use the excuse that they cannot afford the full program cost. But, if that is the case, they need to charge more so that they can afford the proper licenses or admit that they cannot afford to offer the service. You don't get into a legitimate car sales business by starting to sell stolen cars until you build up enough cash flow to be legit.

Sorry...perhaps my rant has gone off topic from OP.

I hadn't spotted the technician license was for financial gain. I'll get in touch with them to confirm. Rest assured I too am an advocate for using correct licensing as I intend to start correctly and carry on the proper way
