Basic System Troubleshooting

Hey everyone! I am brand new here. I have been pursuing an IT profession for 2 years now, most of that time spent in college and figuring out what eventual career I want to fall into. I posted here because I figure that what I will be dealing with shortly is mostly Windows OS issues. Hardware will be part of the potential problems, but I know enough about checking/cleaning/replacing hardware to get me by right now.

So here is my situation. I have two interviews this week, one with Geek Squad and another with a navy contractor. The navy contractor I am not too worried about because I think it is more of an internship and probably will be more systems engineering related. This is definitely where I want to start, but I may end up with the GS job, who knows.

The GS job is what I am here to get advice on. I have heard a lot about how GS is more on the sales side than technical support these days, but I want to walk in there with at least some basic troubleshooting knowledge. I have been studying cybersecurity in college, but not too much of basic PC repairs for home desktops and laptops.

I was hoping you guys could suggest some basic tools/commands or just general things I should know about troubleshooting computers for recreational use. For example, a laptop may be running slowly due to too many background processes at startup, so I would use MSCONFIG to change the options at startup.

I am doing research on my own, but I wanted to get some opinions on my specific query because google only understands what I am trying to ask to a certain extent.

Just think of a basic computer problem and then a simple solution on how to fix it. I'm not asking you guys to go too in depth, just want some basic solutions so that I can research them on my own for more detailed descriptions and procedures.

+1 on Morris's book.

I have spoken with Morris on a number of occasions, and find he is an extremely helpful guy.

I wrote a program for aiding new technicians, in troubleshooting hardware issues, using Morris's flowcharts. If I can find the program on my machines here, I will send it onto you, if you would like it.

It's only a simple yes and no, program, which will aid you in the diagnostics of all hardware issues. The desktop program is complete, and tested working. I also started on a laptop version, but had to stop it 3/4 of the way through, as normal work picked up again. I may get round to finishing it one day lol.
