Who is having the BC run on? If it's an employee and you are carrying G&L I would talk to your underwriter to see which type of BC and who from they recommend. Your underwriter can reject or limit claims if you don't do things the way they want.
If it's for you and someone is asking for it have them tell you where to go so you meet their requirements. If you are interested in doing it yourself for marketing purposes I'm not sure that there would be much benefit unless you are looking at getting government type of work.
At any rate most places are looking for 5-7 years back, felony convictions as well as serious misdemeanors that include substance abuse (including DUI's), petty theft, etc and credit check on top. Basically it can be very complicated. I've only done credit checks at others request. Sometimes they have paid for it sometimes I have.
Edit: forgot to add what you asked for. There are tons of companies out there but I would stick with well know names like lexisnexis, intelius, and adp. There are some others but I cannot remember their names. Many of these pop web companies actually farm out the work to the big companies. PlusOne is a big one for drug tests.

I am doing background checks on employees mainly
I have also sub leased part of my space and want to do bc on the potential tenants
I have not done them in the past, so i was not sure exactly how much information i need to get in order to be as safe as possible

In that case the BC for potential employees could be different that potential tenants. It's your choice. You can run a BC without their, the potential tenants, consent based on the public information they provide you.
