Apple launching new broken iPhone upgrade program

Yet another reason to avoid the low margin, almost no profit smartphone repair route. Apple's phones are by far the easiest to repair, and their users have the most money to burn.

However, I wouldn't think this would hurt the repair industry TOO bad. Only $250 for a last gen flagship phone? It's still going to be a LOT cheaper to fix your current iPhone compared to trading it in and getting peanuts for it from Apple. It's the same thing with Apple's trade in program for laptops. They'll pay you $300 for a 1 year old $2,500 Macbook Pro Retina. Not surprisingly, it hasn't made a dent on my Apple repair business. I don't think very many people will be stupid enough to go for these trade in programs.

Question is, what are they doing with the "broken" one?

Replacing the screen and re-selling them in 2nd or 3rd world countries, or simply as refurbished?

Most of our students have cracked screens, very rarely see an undamaged phone. Most of them will just ride out the contract rather than having them repaired. I don't think this trade in programme will take off with how little they will be offering for the broken handsets.
