I can't get over how cheap apple is. The base model iMacs come with a 5400rpm drive and run like garbage from day one. I used to think the fusion drives ran okay, well not anymore. The 2012 through early 2015 used a 128 gb ssd along the the 1 tb spinner, they actually ran well. We got a late model 2015 in, they now come with a 24gb ssd along with a 1tb spinner. They run almost as bad as the ones configured with a conventional HD only.

We have a job with one today that is just runs like crap. We will probably offer a 1tb SSD upgrade. It is one expensive screen of things go wrong, but we are probably going to take the chance on it

Its not difficult to open if you know what you re doing and if you follow some tutorial and be careful, be sure to not open the display wide before disconnecting all the internal cables, there are 2, the 2011 and earlier had 4 or 5

I am assuming they are like th 2014 models, which we have done. We are going to quote it high to cover the cost of the screen possibly breaking

We got approval for the job. $660 for the 1tb SSD upgrade, $99 to transfer the programs, and $50 for expedited service

Finally, someone that charges appropriately for this crap! If they want to buy the piece of crap, then they'll pay for it. My invoice would read something like this:

$75 - Diagnostic
$329 - iMac Disassembly
$229 - 1TB SSD + Installation & Configuration
$169 - Mac OS Installation
$99 - Data Backup

Total is $901. The other guy on here that did this for like $200 was just blowing his own foot off. A new iMac would be $2,300 with a 1TB SSD so they're getting off easy here. If your shop waives the diagnostic fee with the service (we don't), we're charging about the same.

So if you have a Mac computer you should pay more than a Windows computer??

A relative was recently asking me up upgrading to a new iMac. When I saw they're still doing the fusion drives, I told them not to buy a new iMac until Apple gets their act straight.

Especially on a iMac where the risk of breaking or messing something else exists. All it takes is one f-up and if you are charging Windows prices you will be wiping out the profit from more than a dozen other jobs due to what you will pay out of pocket to correct your mistake/accident.

that is why we factored in an additional $280 more than an ssd upgrade on a laptop

You charge what people are willing to pay. How much would it cost them to replace it with a new one with similar upgrades? How much would Apple charge for the repair/upgrade? Would they even be willing to do it?

People that buy Macs are complete idiots. Sometimes they're just computer illiterate and they realize their mistake after they deal with the first problem, but many Mac users are completely and totally brainwashed. Apple is like a religion - there's no use trying to argue with a religious person because they're too invested in their own beliefs to consider anything that might conflict with them.

I'm not saying there's anything wrong with being religious. I just won't argue with a religious person because they'll believe what they want to believe regardless of what I or anyone else says. Same thing with most Apple people. Just charge them out the a$$ and shake your head at their stupidity. That's what Apple does and it works.

$2600 to get a new 27" imac with a 1tb SSD. At $660, we were low... Bonus, we offer a two year warranty on the drive

That pretty much sums it up right there. The good ole apple isheep people will continue to buy their garbage at premium prices so they should pay premium repairs for them. Just like working on a car. Changing oil on a Bentley will cost a lot more than a Chevy product.

Yes! Its the Apple tax. I do this to avoid working on them but there are those that are tick in the head and want me to work on it anyway.

Had a customer walk in with a MacBook Pro laptop and parked a brand new Tesla Model X in the front of my shop a month ago. Needed a new track pad. Was $320 for the pad, $199 for me to open and replace it. Pad cost 10% of what I charged. Had it done inside 2 hours. The lady came back and just plopped a CC in the machine and added a $75 tip. (I use Square). I was happy.

You forgot the 100k tip

And why is your way of thinking any different? You are just as “close minded” has religious people regarding Apple, i am not saying that they are perfect, because they re not, but sometimes people just make a big deal out of something that’s not .... it’s like “i only work on windows computers because hating Apple is what i do, and i refuse to work or to learn to work on Apple products”, and that’s what lazy people do, no offence intended, and I am not like that, i work in a AASP and I can work also in Windows computers, android phones and tablets, also certified has a Samsung tech, so it’s just a matter of being open to know other realities than the one you , and many other, already know so well... I really don’t understand the hatred for Apple
