apfs data recovery

the client has a macbook air she got last december and almost all but a few of the oldest files are missing

Did it clone without any errors? A MBA SSD likely has TRIM enabled, making the odds of recovery very low if the files were tagged as deleted. R-Studio and UFS Explorer both handle APFS pretty good these days.

I have an old version of R-studio and am hesitant to upgrade it do to the cost, but it may be worth it

Do you guys have a preferred program for APFS file recovery?

Does the client use the free "Time Machine" backup that came with the Mac? if so, that will recover everything on it own. Otherwise I have had good luck with EaseUS programs for recovery on Mac. Of course the last time I did a recovery the format was HFS+.

Definitely, running the demo is the best option to see whether it finds the files.

Luke is right, of the files were deleted, then yeah, TRIM likely wiped theor allocated space.

Is there an issue with the SSD itself at all? If there are no bad blocks shown during the cloning process, then likely the customer forgets where their files are located.
