APC batteries...non-replaceable?

Is the replacement an official apc unit? I thought the APC replacements came with wiring a plastic coupler included.
What do you mean by plastic coupler? Any APC branded replacement battery for a single battery APC unit that I've ever seen didn't come with anything.
You could cut the wire and put a new end on (they're pretty standard ends), though there's not usually a lot of extra wire there.
The battery in the picture is the original from the unit...and ironically every video on APC's site for this model shows people just happily popping the wires right off...and that's not happening here. That red stuff is some kind of adhesive, almost like sugru.
The replacement battery I have is generic. However the problem is the original is glued in.

Is that just adhesive or an adhesive backed foam? On removing the spade lug, sometimes they are tough. Try using a heat gun/hair dryer and then spraying compressed air until it's frosty. Then use needle nose pliers. The red stuff is normal as that is the sign that is the hot lead.

Maybe it's lower end/caoacity models that have spade connectors.. I've not done many but they came with connectors as below:

I've seen those as well. I think the older models all had spade lugs, especially the rack mounts.

I'm confused. You can't just pull the connector off? I've replaced a lot of these small batteries - both the positive and negative wires pull off the metal spade connectors. You pop them off and connect them to the spade connectors of the new battery. It's a pain because there is never enough slack on the wires, but it's possible.
This is the battery, right?

I've replaced a few of these. Just pop the wire off the spade connector and put back on the new battery.
... and try not to electrocute yourself. A UPS can give quite a nasty shock if you are not careful.

The red stuff looks like it might be a epoxy, applied during manufacture perhaps. In any case, the connector is easier to get off if you grip it with needle-nose pliers where it necks down, and wiggle it cross-ways from side to side as you apply upward pressure to walk it off the lug. They can be difficult.

That would be why I haven't gone after it with anything metal/snippy...

Just to be clear, you're not referring to this red stuff are you?
... that's part of the battery. You just need to pull the spade connector off. It may be tight. There's often a locking pin that drops into the hole in the male spade terminal, so you may need to cut off the black heat-shrink sleeving to release it.

Pull from the black boot..outwards. It's a spade connector under the black boot. It will slip off at that seam.
Just like you see on the negative terminal...it appears you already did that.

yeah... as stonecat said... that's a spade connector with some shrink tube on it. Just pull it off. You can use a small flat head screw driver to help pry. Sometimes those connectors will have a plastic boot thingy on them, other times they're just metal with shrink tube. Very common. Some hang on there real hard. It is unlikely that they are soldered on- that's just extra time and money for APC to be spending to manufacture them.
Ah yes, I think you're right. I didn't have my pliers with me and that probably would have solved the problem. I think this one got clamped down exceptionally hard for some reason.
