android dhcp server 2008 setup

I've been searching for an answer to this for a few weeks now, I've noticed that in my shop, android phones cannot access the internet thru my wifi.

I've tried it both secured and un-secured with different routers and the culprit seems to be that I use server 2008 for dhcp/dns, if I let the wireless router itself do dhcp the phones work, if it disable it on the router and go with the server, the phones cant get to the net.

I read somewhere about option 121 "classless static routes" on server 2008 however that option doesnt work or I cant seem to get it set right

my server is 192.168.2.20 and my router/gateway is 192.168.2.1 with dhcp scope starting at .100, anybody have any ideas?

note, if i set static address on phone internet does work fine

Are the android phones at least getting an address/dns/gateway from the 08 server? If so are the getting the correct information? Are you doing any mac address filtering?

I'm getting the same problem at the moment but bizarrely only with one of the 2 access points on site. An old netgear dg834 which works fine and a netgear dg834pn which works fine for a couple of days then has to be rebooted to allow android devices to get a dhcp address however if they are setup with a static address then it works fine as well.

I'm not sure how long I have had the problem as my mobile normally has WiFi switched off but I have noticed it since getting a nexus 7 a couple of weeks ago and have since tried it on my mobile and found the same problem

Can you see doublecheck what IP address and other settings they've received from the server, if any?

There are some android ping tools you can use to diagnose too. See if you can ping the gateway, DNS servers, etc...

I get an ip address inside my normal dhcp range 192.168.0.x and if I check the dhcp server mmc inside windows I can see the name of the android deice and the Correct Mac address. If I try pinging anything on the network I get replies when I'm connected via static or dhcp address

Remove the wireless profile in the phone....search....add the wireless connection again.

I see this on iphones 'n ipads too....chance router and/or DHCP...and sometimes the wireless connection profile has to be removed and added again in the client.

I have tried removing the wireless profile and it did not make a difference. I have tried pinging 8.8.8.8 and I was getting replies however the wireless network is working at the moment I will try in a day or two when the wireless stops working giving addresses out to my tablet

Can you show us some screenshots of your Windows Server DHCP scope and its options, with the exclusion lists?

Thx

Is your server running active directory? If so...should only have 192.168.2.20 as the only DNS server being handed out. You set the OpenDNS servers in the "Forwarding" section of your DNS MMC....so your DC's DNS looks to those for answers. All DNS requests should flow through your DCs DNS. If workstations that are clients in active directory use other DNS sources, their connection to AD will be broken.

Ok, I removed all the dns servers from that screen except 192.168.2.20 and the forwarders section of the dns mmc now has the following

192.168.2.1
208.67.222.222 (opendns)
208.67.220.220 (opendns)
75.75.75.75 (comcast)
75.75.76.76 (comcast)

I'm still not having any luck

EDIT: it appears my comcast modem is the culprit, as soon as I remove 192.168.2.1 from the forwarders list my android works fine

thanks guys!

Probably was getting checked first....and it's the quickest to reply.

FYI...all of my Windows Server setups at client...their DNS forwarders are only OpenDNS.

If you add extra DNS servers...you may loose some of the benefits of OpenDNS blocking of known malware sites...so you lose the protection (since other DNS servers will probably reply with the actual address).
