That line reminds of when I was trying to get an employer to buy me a laptop in the mid '90's. By then Apple had the Powerbook series. The PB 140 was perfect, built in modem, nice rugged chassis, all the accessories, etc, etc. I had a personal one I was using and my boss was impressed. So he sent me to do the pitch to the Director of IT. Personally, in hind sight, I think he set me up just for a laugh. Started in with my analysis vs other Wintel options and Henry cut me off after about 15 minutes. "I worked at IBM for 20 years. I don't approve of employees playing with toys while on the job".

So they purchased a Grid, owned by Tandy (Radio Shack), then. Not near enough memory, took 6 months to get the upgrade. Basically left it at home and just used my PB.

Hello, I see everyone is recommending 365, what about Google Suite for mail? I been setting my customers up with google, I never have use or setup 365 is there any advantages other then the option to get office ?

To me there are two main reasons for O365 vs GSuite.
1. Outlook. Outlook and Exchange were made for each other. Outlook will not be as happy with anything else.
2. Precedence. Most businesses are already running the MS Office suite, as well as Microsoft stack. O365 fits them well and they're adding better things every day.

One of my clients - I say client, they are soon to be fired, just went against our recommendations because they have a computer friend who told them what to do, basically they have hired a VPS online as per friend advice, ya know the kind of thing, Server 2012 R2, Quad Core, 8GB RAM, 60GB Hard Drive Space. In the clients words "I want to put all of my emails on this Server because it's cheaper than what you quoted me for Office 365"..... Sure off you go!!!! I want no part of it. Said client said words like "Exchange" "Can you back it up?"

Oh for crying out loud!

So, long story short, the client wants me to install Exchange on the VPS - and then migrate her 12 users to it. The answer is a resounding No. I quoted "X-Amount" per mailbox for O365 per user per month. It's hardly expensive.

Wait until I let her know the licensing costs for Exchange.

Don't forget CALs, and quote her on what the price would be for applicable storage. IE 12x50GB= 600GB on a VPS... ha!

Indeed, client has been warned, and I have said that I will not support this system either. And as for backing it up......erm.... well it's an option but there will be a cost involved!

Just go with Office 365 for the love of Pete!

I mean, who on earth recommended she go the VPS route I'll never know.. I would like to meet this Computer friend guy, who might I add doesn't know how to make a form on the WordPress site (he just built for the client) send an email to the info@ address.... oh dear!!! ....oh dear oh dear.

+1 for Office365 but I’ve been in your situation before where a client is anti-cloud.

A few years ago we tried a customer on Kerio Mail and it worked great. Not sure what it’s like these days but it’s an exchange alternative to look into.

I have given that client a big square NO. It's not happening and I want nothing more to do with it. Let alone the fact she wont pay for the support of it any way
