Hi all,

I am going to look at a job this week, which will involves port forwarding a few IP cameras so that they can be accessed outside of the office network. The company has a dynamic IP address issued by their ISP.

It seems DynDNS.org now require that you sign up for the pro account with a credit card, you can then cancel the pro account, and as a thank you they allow you to keep 1 free domain. I don't like the sound of that.

So if any of you can recommend a good free service that would be great.

Thanks TLE

personally if I am doing something for a paid client, I like to make sure I use a paid solution, so that I can use support if I ever need it, plus its not that much.

Couldn't the company just pay an extra £5 or so for a fixed IP? There is usually the option with the ISP.

Thanks for the suggestions guys, I have bookmarked them in case of future projects. As for this work, the client has spoken to his ISP and he has a static IP address, so that makes the job so much easier. :D

That was the other option Martyn, as was paid DDNS service.I just wanted to be able to give them all the options and make a recommendation. My preference was for them to have a static IP address, and if they have access to there own websites DNS, then I can also add a subdomain, and point it to the cameras, as that will make accessing it so much easier than trying to remember an IP address.

My router is using Dlink's dlinkddns.com service. Free and I'm fairly certain you don't have to be using a dlink router to use it.

My concern with anything that makes the customer dependent on a 3rd party is, what if that company goes under? How much hassle will I be creating when I could just get them to make one change with their ISP and be otherwise independent.

Now, Dlink, in my example, isn't likely to fold overnight but any of these other companies might not have the same foundation.

no-ip has been around for quite some time ... I don't think they are going away any time soon.

Yes, they have. Point is, though, you never know. If it's only a matter of a few bucks a month for them to not need another company... I'd think it'd be worth it.

I could not agree more with this statement. I had someone switch over to me who was using some sort of dynamic dns and it caused all kinds of hassle. The IP address changed a lot so they often could not connect since the dynamic dns only updated every hour of so. I changed them over to a static IP (and a better router) and it resolved all their connectivity issues.
