Advice needed about dabbling in Remote Support

One thing I do to try to keep my remote skills at their max is I remote into the machines on my workbench.

I do that too sometimes, I remote into the bench computers or have another tech at another location of ours remote in and help out. One feature I love about LMIR is that we can flip computers from one tech to another or log out of the website session and log in at another location and continue the job. I do that on occasion, leave the office and log in on my home computer.

I think logmein free would work just fine for the few jobs you're doing and since you already have them as a past client, should be ok.

Hey callthatgirl, I looked at LM free but it doesn't do file transfer. I was also looking at the Pro version which is within my budget but just quickly reading the pdf, it seems that it may need tweaking of the firewall in some circumstances - have you found this to be an issue?

Not that I know of. Sometimes the clients Kasperky or Norton gets in our way, but we have them shut it off. It's rare though.

Never used LMI free, I have had clients who use it all the time and have us use their connections. Just as fast.

For no file transfer, you can use the public files in dropbox to get the same transfer done. Or just log into your dropbox on their computer and download too.

I haven't try LM FREE but if it doesn't support file transfer, don't let it stop you. There are lots of ways to transfer file. One example is get a free web space and copy your tools. My Remote Access "RA" support file transfer but I still use alternative native method. Sometimes you need to kill the virus before you can event connect. That is way I setup http://rkill.snc-llc.com where my client run it on the run prompt. Feel free to use it.

It doesn't matter what RA you use, sooner or later you need to tweak or disable the firewall.

For me the best feature of RA is to be able to connect to the client, reboot in Safe mode and automatically reconnect. I prepare RA who doesn't required
a third party server or gateway. Just another thing that can go wrong.

Good luck

Supremo free

Hi all,
I still haven't decided on a paid-for remote app.....the ones i want are too expensive (my remote work is limited at the moment so hard to justify several hundred $), I was thinking about Ammyy Admin as it is in my price range but not 100% sure of this one - don't know why, just something in my gut....

Until i make up my mind i have decided to use Supremo Free (supremofree.com) as its free for commercial use. I emailed them to ask if they had considered a paid for/donation version which would have extra features and be able to branded and here is their response:

'We will introduce in a few months a new commercial version of Supremo, that will have some advanced features. The free version will be kept anyway.

The price of the commercial version will be the most competitive on the market, because, as you know, there are several important competitors.

The commercial version will give you the possibility to customize the program with the data of your company.'

Maybe one to keep an eye on for the future.

Just whilst on the subject of remote software it just doesnt function for paid remote work but also to support your onsite work. It can save you trips back to computers you have dropped off only to find you or they have forgotten something. The happened twice with one client where I would have possibly had to do two 20 mile round trips and time I'm away from my workshop I remoted and fixed it in seconds.

I tried Ammyy tonight and was well impressed with the ease of connection, the video quality and the speed - it worked as fast, if not better than LMI which is probably the best out there. It can install a service very easily which enables you to do unattended or reboots. They give you a bit of s/w to customize is a tiny bit in terms of logos and website link.

I don't quite understand the licencing though. The explanation page is mind-boggling to me http://www.ammyy.com/en/admin_license.html

It does say "Business license provides prepaid connection in cases when one of the remote control session participants (client or operator) has "Business" license. Client or operator having "Business" license can have prepaid connection with unlimited number of remote PCs with Free, Business or Home license. The connection is considered to be prepaid by the side on which "Business" license is installed." which implies as long as you have one Business-level licence, you can control and unlimited number of remote PCs with whatever licence version they have.

However the s/w has "Free for personal use only" written on it unless the specific PC you have it installed on is registered with a business edition licence. This means that whilst your PC's copy doesn't have this legend on it, the client's does.

I spoke with Ammyy and it's fine to use with unlimited home users if you have a business licence. For c.£50 for a lifetime Premium licence it's a pretty good deal. Up to 4 concurrent connections (there are higher options too), tunable quality/speed options, service install etc. The main thing is that it just works very well. Foolproof for the end user and fast for the tech.

No wonder all those dodgy Indian "microsoft" scammers use it!

Sounds good, nice find :)

Makes sense I suppose. I can't see 'em forking out for a Teamviewer licence each! :)

Yeah, the Indian scammers used to use LMIR! I saw it on a video and emailed my contact at LMI and said WTF??? now they use the AMMYY site lol.
