We received a computer with viruses and the subsequent fix caused a problem with Windows after the login. So then we did a Windows repair and so now this computer is in an activation loop. Microsoft used to do free technical support on this particular issue, but now they don't. Do computer shops have a standard attack scheme for this? The details are once I enter the password a message appears that asks if I want to activate. Once I choose yes, I see the background with no icons or taskbar and a functional mouse cursor. Ctl-alt-del does nothing. I have worked this same issue with Microsoft support in the past with no success. They have you remove the oobetimer and change other registry settings and files, but they never fix the issue. Have other shops had any success with this issue?

I would do an image of the HD - right now
It sounds like the virus/fix has screwed with some windows files.
I would try
1. chkdsk and sfc
2. repair install
3. if not then tell customer that virus messed up the system and it needs a format and reinstall, which it most likely needs anyway.

I have come across the activation problem and found that I suffered this with XP SP2 repair install. My way around it was repair install with XP SP1 CD instead.

I think I remember somebody posting once about a similar issue...and the problem was an Internet Explorer version incompatibility...I don't remember all the details.

This happens when you clobber a system that had ie8 or ie7 with a repair reload and a disc that has IE 6
I got around once after leaving the pc sit for a while, the apple itunes updater fired up, which let me browse the download location. I could then navigate to the ie7 or ie8 folder inside the windows folder, uninstall IE, then reboot and activation worked.
