I'm in the process of setting up a FreeNAS v8 server in the workshop for the main job of storing Acronis images of customers hard drives. The main requirement is fast backup and recovery of said images.

The NAS has 2x2TB drives in RAID1 as well as gigE. Now i've a couple of questions i'd appreciate some input on....

1. I like using the Acronis Live CD to boot a clients system and do the backup but having just tried this I had mixed results. 37GB was backed up in around 40min (CIFS and FTP) on a laptop with a 100Mb NIC, but the restore was terrible with Acronis estimating 1.5 DAYS - any ideas what could cause this ?

2. Backing up the same image with the drive slaved in my workbench machine (with GigE) was about the same as directly off the laptop (40min) and the restore was about 35min this time. I expected much better though.

3. I read somewhere that FTP was better than CIFs for backuing up to a NAS but not sure why - how do others backup their customers disk images to NAS and what throughput do you typically get ?
