A call for HELP from any AASP's out there that use DS6707 scanners!

Hi all,

a few months ago, Apple said we should all go out and buy DS6707 barcode scanners because they were the <insert brainwashing here> anyway, I purchased 2 off ebay, (im not paying apple $350 AUS for a barcode scanner)
the units have USB cables, they both work very well.. on PC's, Windows, Ubunto etc, no issues, the system sees a 'keyboard' and we all get along.

BUT.
when i connect to a mac, PPc, intel, 10.5, 10.6, Hackintosh or real mac, the scanner goes into a 'im initialising Beep. beep' loop and is fully useless, I have however used other laser barcode scanners on the Macs/Hackintoshes without issue, but they aren't good at reading bar-codes off LCD screens, battery's, reflective surfaces etc.

So.. I thought maybe a firmware update is needed.
downloaded the Motorola 123Scan2 software.. ohh you cant update THAT model via USB, it has to be serial.

so i Ebay'ed for a serial cable for this scanner, found one, got it over from the USA and it doesnt even light the scanner up, it would seem there are some scanners that need serial cables with power injectors in the plug.
Motorola's site is as clear as mud so i thought id turn to my fellow techs in search of aid, neither apple nor moto support can explain why my scanners will work on apparently everything but the Apple OS.
(even when using a hackintosh, the scanners beeps once on power up and is happy, until a few seconds into the Apple logo on boot it starts looping again)

Just out of curiousity, have you tried the IBM handheld mode? I know, I know...HID device, keyboard emulation, all that. Just humor me, because honestly I want to know what the system detects it as.


Unrelated, but I once installed a Wasp barcode scanner that switched modes in a similar fashion. Could not get it to work on one PC and only one PC as a HID. Exact same model of system next to it, same version os XP, worked fine on that machine. Never did figure it out, so I swapped the system's roles. Doesn't help you much, though, I guess. :D

I have tried IBM mode, it doesnt do the beep beep loop when in a mac, but doesnt send anything to the system (at least not via a keyboard interface anyway)
load up notepad/textedit scan something, it gives the recognised beep, but nothing comes up on the computer.
the scan 123 software says to put unit into IBM mode to try updating, i just did that, it still cant see any device so it seems to have 'legacy' firmware which cannot be consumer upgraded.
i have several scanners here, but only these can scan Apples tiny mirrored barcodes <sigh>

Yeah, I knew it wouldn't work. It'd need a driver. I was wondering what system profiler calls it when it's in that mode.
