The 2GB limit has been in place for non compliant systems since AF drives came out back in 2010's (roughly) and some early drives used firmware hacks to merge drives into one volume. I worked on some early WD drives that were this way, they had a few pages in the quick start guide pertaining to it, XP even had an update to support AF drives.
That's the risk when using older equipment, you run into firmware limitations.
It's also an easy trap for a newer tech who never dealt with the transition to AF drives so doesn't understand that there are limitations to some interfaces.
