I have a build i am doing using a Corsair CX Series 650 Watt Bronze Certified Modular Power Supply. Setting it up with a 10tb storage drive to save motion recording from IP cameras.

At the time i didn't realize or notice this Western Digital 10TB Ultrastar - HUH721010ALE604 had
the PWDIS feature.

I know the motherboard can see the drive, i hooked the drive up in a USB 3.0 docking station and it spins up, was able to
initialize the disk and create a GPT partition, Showed over 9TB.

Then i connected the drive via a sata cable tot he motherboard directly and powered it using the power supply for another sata to usb kit i had. Shows the disk in the BIOS and comes up in the OS.

I tried using a molex to sata connector but it didn't spin up. Waiting on some Kapton tape, but i did take some
label maker tape and cut a small strip to cover up the 3rd pin. Still didn't spin up.

Any ideas? Honestly figured the molex to sata would fix the issue and spin up the drive but it won't.

Using a molex adapter should work fine. Molex plugs don't have 3.3v. I'm not sure why it's not working.

Ideally you should either get a power supply that supports SATA 3.3 specs or buy drives that don't have PWDIS support.

Using the USB2SATA bridge means the motherboard is seeing whatever the bridge passes. The reverse can happen with an older USB2SATA bridge which can't pass 3tb+ drives properly.

My vote, based on the trouble shooting, is a power related issue. Do you have another power supply to test with? What happens with using the drive on another machine?

Here is a discussion - it looks like the adapter route is the way to go. So now we need to start looking for "PWDIS-compatible" power supplies if you're going to be using a PWDIS drive in a machine.

There's a phrase stuck in my mind from somewhere - "Molex-to-SATA, lose all your data". haha, now I'll have to figure out where I got that from.
