I have one of these on my bench at the moment, 3 years old, so on the younger side for a failure (ish), but just trying to decide whether it should be in the "not worth fixing" pile or not.

Symptom is a non-start. Charging light is lit when adapter is plugged in, jack is ok. No light on the power button when attempting to power it on, and unfortunately, this is one with the soft power button as a keyboard key. No lights or fans when attempting to power on. It's as if you didn't even push the button.

Adapter tests ok, and I get the same symptoms with a 2nd adapter. Doing a power drain after unhooking the battery doesn't change symptoms.

I'm getting 12.9 volts at the battery connector when plugged in, so it's charging. I'm getting 12 volts out of the battery when it is disconnected, so battery appears to be charged. There are no visual problems with the motherboard on the back side anyway, and I couldn't find any hot spots with a laser thermometer.

I could not locate any traces on the motherboard (the side I could see anyway) that I could short to test the power button, so that means it probably has to be tested at the keyboard connector, which is on the side of the motherboard that faces the keyboard, so can't be tested in-situ. You can't replace the keyboard on this thing either, you'd need a whole top plate, which is not listed on the HP parts site as purchasable, and I'm not going to risk wasting time on purchasing a used unit.

So I think the issue is either a bad keyboard (power key) or bad motherboard, and narrowing it down further requires more effort than it's worth.

Did I miss anything?

I have had some luck with seemingly dead laptops by doing power drain with CMOS battery/RAM/SSD/WLAN card removed as well.
Not sure whether these options are doable on your model?
