For anyone who hasn't worked on the HP Envy M6 series laptops yet, there are 13 screws that hold the keyboard to the top cover. 13 friggin screws! This is after you have to pull the bottom case, battery, motherboard, USB/Audio board and unscrew/flip the LCD hinges up. Seriously, did they think somebody was going to steal this thing? Oh, and beyond that there's an additional 2 screws that hold the keyboard itself to the bracket. Overall, there's a total of 46 screws that need to be removed in order to perform a simple keyboard swap (and the best part is, these keyboards are prone to failure).

So yea, consumer laptops absolutely suck.

Yikes. I do appreciate business grade laptops.

Thanks for the teardown link!

...though you were going to say 13 screws left over after you put it back together. That's when I just tell the client I thought their laptop was "over-engineered" and didn't need 'em all! :)

I was thinking the same thing! My heart sank when I read the title.

The worst keyboard I've done was a 2012 MacBook Pro. Normally, I would just replace the upper case, but this was my wife's computer and I didn't feel like paying for that part, so I did a keyboard only replacement. I believe I counted nearly 80 screws total. Needless to say, my carpal tunnel was acting up the next few days.

Yea... if I had that many screws left after putting a system back together I'd hang it up and go work as a trash collector or something lol.

And what does it really gain them Apple to do so? I mean seriously, they could've put 10% of the screws in there that they did and it would've held up just as well. Why waste the extra money and resources to do that?

What are the odds that both were designed by the same product designer/engineer who just has a thing for keyboard fasteners?

There are a lot of strange fetishes out there. This could certainly be one of them. Maybe he enjoys watching the YouTube teardown vids? Ha!

The difference is that there's no official Apple teardown guide that's going to tell you to do that
I love the fact that Apple expects you to replace the entire top case just to replace the keyboard. What a waste of all that aluminum!
