£130. Spec me some components for a build.

Helping a friend's mum out for his birthday, my gift is to spec and build the pc cheaply for her. (not getting paid for this)

They already have a SATA HDD, KB, Monitor, DVD-Drive, Mouse, OS.

I need;

Case + PSU
Motherboard
CPU
RAM.


Use: Internet browsing, spreadsheets, photo viewing, watching dvds. Light gaming (solitaire type games)

Your not going to get much for £130, but that said its not exactly going to be overworked.

Something like this lot would prob be a good guess and guide. Not state of the art but would be good enough for what its intended use is going to be.

Nowhere near me really with bundle deals. I like the bundle, however the software is un-needed.

Ignore the software, its just thrown in as costs less than tenner anyway.

Postage is next day at £5 so might be worthwhile.

Pick a case locally.

Unfortunately not a member of anywhere. Would you say that bundle is more than adequate for my 'clients' needs? Seems great to me.


Considering hes been using a 10 year old desktop with 512mb ram, and a 1.6ghz pentium for the last 10 years, and not even a single OS reload within that 10 years.


I can get a similar priced build with a 3ghz intel dual-core sandbridge for around £130. Would you say opt for the AMD ?

Judged by the usage, I would look more at the RAM than the CPU.

What OS is planned for the system?

Is it 64 bit ? If not then anything with more than 3 gb is a waste of money as 32bit has that memory limitation.

Personally, I prefer the intels.

Having said that, the CCL triple core AMD looks a good deal. I've used them for years and they are my main supplier (as I live just down the road).

I like Newegg's barebones systems. They're affordable and pretty decent specs for a self built system. (Don't know if they ship to UK... Never tried but pretty sure they would)

Is there a huge difference? Both chips have good reviews, both have powerful gpus, i know celeron have a rep for being sluggish however i feel a sandybridge may be different.

I'm American so I'll take your budget and multiply it by 2 and pretend like we are talking dollars.

I know I'll be off, but if it's obscene I apologize. Just beer with me.

Case + PSU: the PSU is obviously what matters here. Everyone has their favorite brand. Personally I'm still running the same 600w Cooler Master I bought when my last one died 6 years ago. I like it. On a budget, look for a case + PSU combo built by your favorite PSU manufacturer.

Motherboard: Based on your specs I'd go with LGA 1155. I'd drop in a chip like:

In whatever low end motherboard is compatible and you like. Intel boards have better warranties but lack cutting edge features like USB 3 and 6GB SATA.

4 GB of DDR3. 8 if there is money left over.

With the Llano your paying for decent 3D performance but if they only need 2D / Aero, the Intel should be okay. I wouldn't get that case / PSU though. My motto is if getting cheap get the cheapest 'cut-your-fingers' case BUT a half decent PSU.
