Dead Pixel Buddy – Detect Dead Pixels on LCD Screens

Shares

Dead Pixel buddy is a small, standalone, freeware tool designed to help you detect dead pixels on LCD screens. There are many types of dead pixels. Some dead pixels are only visible when the screen is totally black, white or a certain color passes over it. Dead Pixel Buddy has buttons which you can press that will fill the screen with a certain color allowing you to detect them easier. It also has a time cycle feature where the fullscreen color cycles between the colors so you can test all colors in one go.

this is a really nice tool, works great, even in vista.

There are online test tools as well: see for instance this link.

  • So once you diagnose the dead or stuck pixel, is there anything you can do about it?

I was hoping this program would do more than just identify them. I suppose this application could come in handy to provide proof when returning a monitor still under warranty.

Yes…there is a tool to fix dead/stuck pixels. Oddly enough it’s called “Dan’s Dead Pixel Fixer” and you can download it here..

It repairs the damaged pixel by exposing it to rapidly changing colors at various intensities. I have used it on both CRT and LCD displays with a great deal of success.

However, due to a risk of seizure…you need to be careful when and where you use it. DO NOT use it if you (or anyone in the room with you)happens to be epileptic.

  • Thank you Jm Boyd! I left DDPF running for a few hours, and when I came back, no more stuck pixel. I definitely feel safer using a piece of software than the old pressure on the screen trick (which in my experience rarely works).

I didn’t even know a CRT could get a stuck pixel. I would have thought a dead pixel on a CRT would be due to something physically inside in the machine like a speck of dust, or perhaps a problem with the shadow mask. Anyhow, thanks for the link!

I guess I should have been clearer on the issue of using this on a CRT monitor.

Dead pixels on a CRT are normally cause by some sort of physical anomaly that normally cannot be repaired with a software solution like DDPF. However, I sure we have all seen the

Nice tool to identify the dead pixel. I couldn’t find any in my Samsung 206BW LCD monitor. :)

By the way Thank you Jm Boyd for the dead pixel fixing tool. ;)

  • Fix Dead Pixels says:

Ok. There are a lot of software that tries to remove those stuck pixels. The best until now is “UDPixel”. It has a double function: can locate the stuck pixel and will try to remove it. It will take from 1-2 minute up to 30 minutes. It works in 70%-80% of the cases
