Western Digital lost 6.5 exabytes of NAND due to manufacturing contamination. They say that's about 10% of the market so they expect prices to go up due to shortages. There's a few articles out there but here's one if you want more details. Now may be the time to stock up on SSDs?

This is a good example of how sensitive the whole market is to a single vendor. This was contamination at TWO different plants, so I'll be interested to read the details if they ever release what actually happened.

Which is doubtful, unfortunately. And I have to say it's all the more so since these plants are located in Japan, and the Japanese are known for holding things very, very close to the breast indeed, particularly when something goes wrong.

The only reason this likely went public was an attempt at damage control, as there was no way it could "go unnoticed."
