The best way to be secure is to keep yourself up-to date with latest virus definitions and goings on in the IT industry.

9/10 of us are file sharers and as such a high target for port sniffers and obviously MPAA RIAA etc.

Check your virus definitions DAILY, most anti-virus software automatically checks its definitions if you are on broadband, however dial-up will not.

Check windows updates regularly, MS like to have fatal flaws and open doors in their operating systems so its nice when they patch them

Get a pop-up blocker, or just use an alternative browser to IE like Firefox

If you use eBay or Paypal - DO NOT FOLLOW A LINK FROM AN EMAIL!
Just go to the site and navigate manually, yes it is painstaking however it could be the best way to avoid a phishing scam (even though fraudulant emails are easy to spot to the trained eye...and should be to the untrained)

Yes, lots of emails ask for PayPal users link to follow, don't click and don't enter any of your secret details!!

Recently I received a fake email from "Yahoo" notifying me about "$500" winning. Again, don't click and don't enter your details!!

Use your AV always enable, use pop-up blocker (many of them have viruses), and don't open any email you don't want to receive. Emails with pornography titles related, are mostly viruses!!

Just dont go paranoid about updating your virus definations daily the minute pc goes online. But remember to keep firewall on, cause the minute it goes down someone will enter your pc . And get rid of xp firewall its pretty much useless.

The strangest thing happened, I signed up for paypal, and my father started recieving e-mails alerting of frivolous purchases I have made... It is interesting what spammers can do, almost scary.

I wish there was an anti virus program that would automatically update itself and run in the background without using too much RAM. I have yet to find something that does these two simple things.

I use AVG Free. I believe it has the auto update feature.

AVG Free does have an auto update feature, however you know about it when it does it so it doesnt really "do it in the background". But still, it does it very quick and doesnt need any human input.
