I have a dell windows 2008 server that is giving me an error message every few days when I try to open active directory users and computers. It says "naming information cannot be located: the server is not operational". It will say this until I reboot the server.

My GFI agent reports server offline when this happens and I cant connect with teamviewer. However I can remote in with GoTo Assist and the server is on the internet.

Another odd thing that happens is that if I run an ipconfig when I have this error message. It doesn't show an ip address.

Has anyone come across this before?

I'd troubleshoot before you reboot it....

Hit up Event Viewer....go through all the nooks 'n crannies. Look for active directory related items.
Look at services.msc and see if any that should be running...are in a stopped state.

What happens if you restart DNS Server services? in services.msc

Bring up DNSMGMT.MSC...expand....flush, update, restart the DNS services there.

In TCP/IP properties of the server, for IPv4, is it using itself (it's own IP, or 127.0.0.1)? Nothing else? No secondary DNS right?
