Your top choice of Anti-Virus.

ESET for paid, MSE for free. In most cases I recommend MSE, rarely do I recommend retail.

I too am curious about this topic, so I'm looking forward to seeing if I'm wrong in my thinking on this topic =)

For businesses we always recommend Eset NOD32 or Smart Security.
For home the same but if they can't afford then MSSE.

Comodo AntiVirus.... But if the computer can't run it do to low resources or something, then.... Microsoft Security Essentials. I haven't used a PAID version of security software in a very long time. If I pay for any security software then its... Sandboxie. Antivirus is surely not 100%, so a layered approach is the best for my customers. And I will use a combination of Sandboxie & MSE with a number of other things I configure for better security on top of securing the Windows OS also. So...

PAID = Sandboxie
FREE = Comodo AntiVirus or MSE

Avg

My top choice is AVG. Not only because my business is an authorized reseller but their products have been good to me. I have AVG for the past couple of years now. Some techs may disagree. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion. Some tell me to use Norton, Avast, etc. It is up to you. Your decision to make. That's all. Research first to find out who has the best customer service.

We sell Kaspersky because we can buy it very cheaply and thus make significant profit from it, but I don't like the impact it seems to have on machines (especially older ones, but even some new ones too). ESET is my first choice, but isn't very cheap, meaning we would have to sell it for even more and get fewer customers from it. MSE for free, it does it's job pretty well.

Paid....for businesses...Eset NOD32 for clients that will not be on our managed N-Able service. For clients that will be on our managed N-Able service..we'll use the built in N-Able antivirus..based on Panda.

Free...for home users, and small businesses of up to 10 computers sans server...Microsoft Security Essentials.
