Your private / pc at home.

I was just wondering how many of you guys and gals 'distance' themselves from work on your pc at home.

What I'm asking is: is your home machine also filled with work related tools / software or can you actually let go of work and is it only filled with photo/video editing software, astronomy software, pr0n , games or whatever other things keep you busy off-hours.

My answer: my home machine has both: hobby-, games, and yes, also work related software

Not so much these days. After I moved the office out of home, I built a 'home' desktop, and thats what I tend to use, plus a Tablet. Neither are really set up for work and tend to be just internet/email/games for the weekends and afterhours.

I've got my desktop at home. My laptop comes home, my desktop is an amd 8 core fx 8120 overclocked to 4.0 ghz, 8 gb ram, 7850 video card, 1080p 22 inch monitor, mostly game on it. I can do work related stuff, I have my external, and also a kingwin sata drive dock I picked up for 15 bucks.

Currently, I do not have one. I have not had Internet in about 3 years since I started this business and the only computer I have had at home is a fairly decent but relatively basic one that we hook up to our 42inch TV that we occasionally use. We do not watch a whole lot of TV, and for what I do want to watch, I typically download and bring home --so, we also do not have cable. Other than that, I am around computers and the internet so often, that I really have no desire to be around one at home. As for the rest of my family (wife and kids) my wife could care less about computers and my kids rarely watch anything more than educational shows on DVD.

In my career, I've only been kicked out of a house twice.

The second occasion was for a customer taking offence at me criticising her PC supplier friend, specifically in that the windows serial stickers had been scratched off.

The first was for this.
She acknowledged that she knew little about computers and that she downloaded all sorts of rubbish and tended to agree with any screen / popup that came up.

UNFORTUNATELY, her husbands business was also run off the same machine, it had SAGE software amongst other business programs, together with their customers financial and personal details.

I said, in as diplomatic a fashion as I could, that this was a bad idea. I recommended a separate machine for work and pleasure.

She didn't like that.
She argued my fee.
She asked me to leave.
I did.

I have separate machines for work and home.
Ok, sometimes it spills over, but for the most part, I recommend that these two aspects are kept well apart.

In our line of work, we cannot risk cross contamination.

my repair PC,
my server,
my backup server,
2 iPads,
3 iPhones,
several laptops,
a wife, daughter and a mad hamster called missy.

For me, they're so hopelessly intermingled it's kind of scary... but then, I'm operating a mobile business out of the home.

I have my server, and it's not accessible other than remotely... I have my desktop that does double duty, and then my bench computer that half the time doesn't have an OS in it because I use it mostly for slaving HDD's and booting to Parted Magic or some other diag. CD. I have my netbook that I take on-site with me, and that doubles as my main laptop, and then I have the laptop that I'm using right now that really doesn't have anything work-related on it at all because I'd been letting my kid take it home with him during the week. And then of course Amanda has her laptop that has dropbox w/ all the work stuff on it as well...

I still love computers. I have a cousin that owns a mechanics shop and he said he loved cars until a few years after he became a mechanic, now they're just appliances to him.

I think I have a passion for them because of the endless possibilities. My current home system is nothing over the top, but I have a nice 3 monitor eyefinity setup that I couldn't live without and it also works nicely for video games when I get the chance. I'm an F1 and WRC fan and racing games are incredible across 3 monitors.

I know. I can't even start to imagine a life with no internet at home. BUT this: "I am around computers and the internet so often, that I really have no desire to be around one at home." does make sense. And I respect that

No secret lair, no stolen Wifi connection, not even a smart phone in my possession . . . in fact, I have not seen my cell phone in weeks. I guess I am not your average tech. I mostly run my business, spend time with family and during my free time I listen and read tons of business books. As long as I can download my books and shows (which I admit I rarely watch) at work, I have no real need for it at home.

I currently have 8 desktops and 3 laptops. Some are for work and others I use for entertainment purposes. Two systems are set up as HTPC's and one I use for data storage and backup.

The wife and I are vintage movie buffs and I have been trying to build a higher end system for handling video encoding but every time I complete a system a customer comes in and buys it. LOL...

I also have: My server running Ubuntu 12.04 server with a 2tb raid5, My MythTV box upstairs and a laptop that dualboots win7 and linux mint.

I have a wireless up next to the Mythtv box in the living room that doubles as a "emergency connection" for my neighbor in case her internet goes down. Then I also let her use my mythtv wirelessly if she wants.
