XP Certification

Hey guys i was just wondering if you can just shed some light on me.

I want to get Windows XP certified, well just because i think it is the back bone of other certifications i want to get (i want to become a Microsoft Certified Desktop Support Technician).

But my delema is that Windows XP will no longer be sold or shipped with new computers, it will either be shipped with Windows 7 or Vista.

Now my question is this

Should i still go for my Windows XP cert?
Or skip it and get Windows 7?

If i go the windows 7 route, i will have to study all over again.

Currently i have my A+ only.

Thanks

I would go with windows 7, once Microsoft quits supporting windows xp that certification will be retired and meaningless to everyone but you.

...and once Windows 8 comes along that too will soon become retired & meaningless.

As Alan22 says, if you're not prepared to keep learning this business is not for you.

Start with XP, then upgrade to Vista & then 7.

I second this statement. You should be prepared from XP up.
The fact that Windows 7 is out, and eventually 8, it does not mean that a lot of machines will suddenly not be XP anymore.

Considering this path, I might just do Windows XP and then 7 but Vista would not hurt either.

It makes you better rounded - I think.

I have mentioned it elsewhere but here it is again...go to www.techexames.net. It is a very good resource.

Good Luck!

I think you want to learn what is useful to you. So if you think you'll be dealing with lots of XP computers then it's worth learning.

I really enjoyed studying for the 70-290 and found out some thing I didn't know.

Go buy the book for it and study it but get certification for windows 7. The book is just to keep your head clear. That way you dont have to pay for the cert but you have the training you need for both operating systems. Or hell get both. Seriously. If I had the money Id be certified with as much stuff as I could possibly muster. The first option i gave is a little more realistic though. :)

First get the Network + if possible as its recommended by most of MCDST and 70-270 study guides. It will also help with your MCDST since it has a lot of networking topics but doesn't go into technical detail. Much of the MCDST material goes on the assumption you already know alot about TCP/IP, DNS, DHCP etc.

As many have said start with XP and move your way up.

XP is still the main business OS for most organizations.

Won't Microsoft retire the XP Certification at some point...sooner rather than later...?...regardless of how many millions of people still use the product, simply because they'll no longer support it and want people to upgrade? Just wondering what others think of this...

It will be retired (the 70-270 exam) when XP is no longer supported.
Is it 2014 ?

Its like A+ .. Its a foundation .. Its not necessarily needed, but its somethin' to build on ..

Even 5 years down the track(when it is retired); havin' the 270 will still show you have a understanding of how Windows O/S's work in the real-world.
