Helping a friend with her Wordpress site, I looked for Wordpress help forums but it seems you have to pay.
She wants to get rid of the name of the guy that set the site up.

Also, she wants to know how to change the sub-menus
when people do a google search it shows links. are these the menus she has in Wordpress

I just looked at ruthleithal.com and it looks like your friend was able to get this done.

WordPress forums - absolutely free: https://wordpress.org/support/forums/ P.S. If your friend hasn't already figured this out, that text will most likely be in footer.php of her theme. If not, she should download the files (I assume she has ftp access) and then Grep it as a regular expression...once she finds it, easiest thing is to just comment it out. DO NOT start deleting <divs> etc.

Edit: Once done, ask Google to re-crawl it.

i can give you a hand setting up the basics of wordpress if you want, modifying the footer like Mick said is the way to go, or simply ask the developer to remove that? i'm not sure if she bought the theme or if the guy designed her site by request, sorry.
