That's an understatement. Let's get it right... 8 Flakes would bring the country to a standstill!

I spent some time in Buffalo one Christmas, and drove up to see other friends just outside Ottawa. It was -45 then. I think the max time you could safely stay outside was something like 12 or 17 minutes!

I also used to fly into Syracuse as I have friends in Utica as well. Seeing 3 foot of snow drop in one day was not uncommon, as I'm sure you guys from the North East and Upper North East know.

Great fun driving in a rented Mustang though :D

We're getting a small bit of it here, the day started at about 55F, and is supposed to hit 10F. Shouldn't get any serious snow though thankfully, last week's was nasty enough.

As a Connecticut native, we're fairly used to this thing, so I know how bad it can be, and it can only be worse for those not used to it. Hope everyone stays warm and safe, and for the love of god drive slow!

Back then we all drove big old rear wheel drive cars around and we knew how to drive in the snow and get around just fine!

After one incident in Middle School, I will never again complain about cancellations due to winter conditions. I took a bus to school, and after picking us up at the last stop approx 30 mins late and us kids just standing outside freezing, we started travelling up a hill on the way back. The light turned red as we came up to the crest, and the second the bus stopped moving forward, it started moving backwards. This was a steep hill and we started really moving, and probably slid about 30 yards before hitting a car coming up behind us and getting shoved up onto somebody's yard. For a packed school bus full of kids sitting in seats with no seatbelts, it was terrifying. Thank god it didn't flip.

LOL!!! My parents live down in North Carolina. They get the occasional dusting and a few overnight hard freezes in Pinehurst (low elevation). About 10 years ago they had freezing rain and then 3 days of below freezing weather. Stuck in their house for 3 days was tough. Basically no salt or sand for the roads.

But the whole Gulf Stream thing still amazes me. I've been in London in January a couple of times and just had rain and a little hail. It's at the same latitude as Newfoundland.

I live outside of Syracuse. 50 all day and then 3 ft of snow the next morning.
 
This morning at 6:00AM EST it was -4 with a windchill of -13. All schools in a 100 mile radius were closed. Except my daughters school. :mad: No way am I taking her out to wait a bus stop this morning. If it warms up above 10 I will take her to school myself.

Kids don't need to be exposed to this type of weather. Especially children with asthma or other health issues. Now I am all for bundling her up and making her go to school, and she is even mad at me for not letting her go this morning. She loves school. It is just too risky, if her bus breaks down along the 1hr route she will be waiting in the cold. This has happened before about 6 weeks ago and it took them over an hour to pick them up. Luckily it was 50+ degrees that morning. Not risking her getting sick or frost bite. /endrant

What are your thoughts?
 
-24 here wind chills put it at -45... I'm waiting in the airport to fly down to alabama.... my crew in Huntsville said folks are going crazy because of the weather lol.

Had to walk a mile and a half to the shop yesterday... it was cold! Air temp was -29 before wind chills.

As to schools closing we usually don't close until wind chills drop to -25 or colder.
 
Last night before I went to bed it was 35f, this morning when I woke up it was 10f, now with the sun up shining bright, its 5f. :confused:

Wind chill is -20f. We're used to the very cold on Long Island, but this is deadly stuff. You cant go outside for more than a couple minutes because the winds are gusting to 30mph and it freezes your face.

LOL!!! Well they are pretty soft in DC. My daughter lives there and sent me a sms this AM that they have closed schools there because it's too cold. 7F.
 
Well, We are now up to -2 F right now in South Bend, Indiana. My poor car that sits outside the garage because my wifes sits in it - Would not start /turn over this morning. Looks like the death of a battery probably. I have had that battery for a long time.

They finally are getting a good hold on the main roads here but extended the emergency time (no one on roads during this time) to 12noon. Now its past that and secondary roads still are not plowed.

Everything is a sheet of ice and feels like styrafoam. :)

I'm grounded... so rental car and 10hrs of driving to go.... 10hrs in delays, 7 cancelled flights... I don't dare ask what else could go wrong....
 
Well 7 cancelled flights, 12hrs at the airport, $300 in a rental car and 22hrs of travel later... and I'm in huntsville alabama again...

The Indiana roads were awful... 4hrs to go 90 ish miles last night on i65.
 
9 degreees 2 days ago, 7 degrees yesterday. Today it's in the teens...just barely....13....but it feels like a heat wave! Tomorrow might bump 30...time to bring out the shorts!

Now that the snow is basically over, We are going to have melting temps in our area - Indiana. So, All this stuff melts and the flooding starts. Last time this happened my sump pump ran every 5 mins or so.

My garage is a soupy mess right now between snow/slush melting off the cars and now rain... I swept it all out earlier and it was easily 4-5 gallons of water (it's a huge garage.) I'll probably have to install a [couple?] dry-wells for drainage because this is kinda nuts.
